Adnan Kaplan is a reputed Starfleet officer who gained renown in his many front-line exploits as Commanding Officer of various starships, spanning a period of 20 years.
As of 2385, he held the rank of Rear Admiral and serves as Flag Officer-in-Command of Task Force Perseverance, and is concurrent Commanding Officer of the Vesta-class Command Cruiser USS Perseverance.
Childhood[]
Kaplan was born in 2325 on the planet Vulcan. Despite his mixed heritage, he received a Vulcan upbringing. Growing up there, he met and became close friends with another child of mixed heritage, Razal Gibran.
Starfleet Academy[]
Kaplan joined Starfleet Academy at the age of 18 years old on 2342. He graduated at the top 95 percentile of his class in 2346.
Starfleet Career[]
After 11 years in Starfleet, Kaplan reached the rank of captain and was given command of the Excelsior-class starship USS Grissom (NCC-42857) on 2357. He capably commanded the Grissom for five years before transferring to the Ambassador-class starship USS Hammarskjöld on 2362 and served onboard the ship for another five years.
On 2367, Kaplan was given command of the Akira-class starship USS Osceola and served onboard for six years, until 2373, when he was given command of the Galaxy-class starship USS Persia, where he served the longest.
Kaplan finally accepted a promotion to the rank of Commodore on 2380 and was assigned to command massive starship construction projects Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards at the instigation of Admiral Maximus Hunter, which lead to the multiple construction of many of the starships that would eventually comprise the Vanguard Fleet.
Vanguard Command[]
The idea to form Task Force Perseverance was made shortly after the launch of Abraxis Command and Task Force Dauntless. Vice admiral Razal Gibran was able to convince Starfleet Command that a special unit charged with exploring the far end of space between the Khronnian Suzerainty and the Alliance of Gamma Quadrant Planets and the boundary between the Gamma and Alpha Quadrants was important. Though the primary mission of the task force was science, exploration and diplomacy, it was also tasked to perform reconnaissance, intelligence, and defense for Starfleet and the Federation in case there were potential threats in that region of space.
The idea drew inspiration and lessons from Project Full Circle, which was a similar endeavor done by Starfleet for the Delta Quadrant under the flagship of USS Voyager.
However, despite best efforts, Starfleet Command only allowed that the new task force could only be composed of 10 starships, with no two starships coming from the same class. Nevertheless, Admiral Gibran was able to negotiate that all 10 ships would be new constructions, outfitted with quantum slipstream drives, and modified in the same way as the ships of Task Force Dauntless, with enhanced science and tactical features.
Upon formation of the ships of the new task force, overall command was given to Admiral Kaplan and was attached to Abraxis Command as a special unit and secondary mobile arm of Abraxis Command. Task Force Perseverance was to fulfill its mission from outside Station Deep Space Gamma-01, which was to be its home base.
The area of space between the farthest known parts of the Alpha Quadrant and the Khronnian Sovereignty was vast. Several spacefaring races were reported to exist there.
