Alea Illacta Est is the tenth episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season One.
Plot[]
The Enterprise is ordered to head to an Andorian colony near Andorian space, to oversee repairs to one of their colonies power reactors. So they call the USS Harrison carrying Lieutenant Commander Kyle Clarkson, friend of Captain John Branson and godfather of his two daughters, but when a devastating tragedy results in the Andorians demanding something to be done to Mister Clarkson what is John gonna do?

The Enterprise enters orbit of the Andorian colony Weyh'tan.
INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE
The crew are at their stations.
CAPT. BRANSON
Establish standard orbit.
ENS. CARLSON
Aye, sir.
Captain Branson turns to Lieutenant Smith at the communications station.
CAPT. BRANSON
Julia hail the colony main building.
LT. SMITH
Uh we're being hailed by them.
CMDR. IVANOVA
That was fast.
Captain Branson gets up from the Captain's chair.
CAPT. BRANSON
On screen.
Transparent viewer shows the building of the colony.
CAPT. BRANSON
I'm John Branson Captain of U.S.S. Enterprise we're here in response to an issue that you're having with your power core?
COLONY LEADER
(Viewer)
Yes Captain its good that the Federation has sent someone to help us
CAPT. BRANSON
I can send a team down to check it to see if there's something that we can do.
COLONY LEADER
(Viewer)
Thank you Captain.
Transmission ends.
CAPT. BRANSON
Susan take a team down there and find out what's going on with it.
CMDR. IVANOVA
(nods)
Mason, T'Lar your with me have Commander Williams and a Engineering team meet us in the transporter room.
LT. SMITH
Aye Commander.
The trio enter the lift and the doors closed.
EXT-WEYH'TAN SURFACE/DAY
A shot of the colony.
INT-ANDORIAN POWER CORE COMMAND AREA
Commander Ivanova, Lieutenant Commander T'Lar, Lieutenant Mason, Lieutenant Commander Williams and a pair of engineers materialize, and they turn on their flashlights and take a look around.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Well no wonder they're having issues with it main power is off-line.
CMDR. IVANOVA
Can you do something about it?
Lieutenant Commander Williams inputs commands into the console and lights come on, and they turn off their flashlights.
LT. MASON
Whoa big room.
LTCMDR. T'LAR
Yeah it is a big room.
Lieutenant Commander Williams scans the place with her scanner and then runs a scan on the console.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
(Examining Tablet)

The Enterprise is in orbit of the Andorian colony of Wey'tahn.

So it's a military research facility?
CAPT. BRANSON
From the looks of it Admiral.

What caused their power core to go off-line
CAPT. BRANSON
We're not sure but I would like to request that we have some help figuring it out.
VICE ADM. OZAWA
(Monitor)
The U.S.S. Harrison is near your position I can have them meet up with you there, and maybe both Engineering teams could figure out what's going on with it
CAPT. BRANSON
Thanks Admiral we'll be waiting.

Monitor shows the power core.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
My further examination of the scans show that its pulling power from the planet's core to power itself.
CAPT. TOWE
Geothermal?
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Correct ma'am.
CAPT. BRANSON
I remember the Federation wanting to go into that type of thing but they couldn't figure out what was going on with it, but the Andorians have been able to do it better then we would of.
CAPT. TOWE
But what's wrong with it?
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Unknown at the moment ma'am.
Towe turns to Captain Branson and Commander Ivanova.
CAPT. TOWE
I have an engineering team down there right now.
CAPT. BRANSON
I like to meet that engineering team.
EXT-WEY'TAHN DAY
The Shuttle approaches the core facility.
INT-ANDORIAN POWER CORE ROOM
Many engineers are at work Captain Branson, Lieutenant Mason, and Lieutenant Commander Williams arrive and one of the officers sees him.
ENS. GUILLERMO
CAPTAIN ON DECK
Everyone snaps to attention.
CAPT. BRANSON
As you all were I'm looking for the head engineer.
Then Lieutenant Commander Kyle Clarkson appears with a tool in his mouth.
CAPT. BRANSON
(Smiles)
Kyle its good to see that you're up on your feet again man.
They shook hands.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(Smiles)
Well if it wasn't for the Enterprise pulling my team and the Harrison out we'd be pushing up daisies right about now.
These are my officers Lieutenant Jack Mason chief security officer and my Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Stephanie Williams, this is Lieutenant Commander Kyle Clarkson we served together onboard the U.S.S. Ajaxs under Commodore Boone.
LT. MASON
Its nice to meet you sir.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Likewise Mister Mason
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Its an honor to meet you Commander.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Same here Commander.
CAPT. BRANSON
So what's going on with this core?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
We're not sure we've tried everything to get it started.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Haven't you started a level-one diagnostic on it?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
That was our first thing we checked for and couldn't find anything, our diagnostic engineer Tarak is working on it right now we'll go to him.
They head over to one of the stations when a Denobulan Starfleet at Earth standard years of 23 with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade stands up.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Report?
LTJG. TARAK
We're still running a level one diagnostic on the power core sir but we still don't know why its not generating power to the colony.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
This is Lieutenant Tarak our diagnostic engineer these are officers from the U.S.S. Enterprise.
CAPT. BRANSON
Nice to meet you Lieutenant.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
I never thought I'd get to meet a Denobulan outside of the Ambassador and the Council chairman.
CAPT. BRANSON
So what can you tell me?
LTJG. TARAK
Well sir the core isn't working for some reason and this should be happening at all its just strange.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Thanks Tarak why not go to a level 3 diagnostic.
LTJG. TARAK
(nods)
Aye, sir.
The young Denobulan gets back to work and they go over to a young female Lieutenant.
LTCMDR. CLAKRSON
This is Lieutenant Junior Grade Carolina Young this is Lieutenant Commander Stephanie Williams, Lieutenant Harrison Payne, and Captain John Branson their from the Enterprise.
She shakes their hands.
LTJG. YOUNG
Its nice to meet you all.
CAPT. BRANSON
Same here Lieutenant so what is it you do?
LTJG. YOUNG
I am the EPS and life systems tech sir.
CAPT. BRANSON
Nice I never seen a EPS and life systems technicians before.
LTJG. YOUNG
I'm one of the best sir.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
This is Ensign Bo Travers and Ensign Guillermo.
ENS. TRAVERS
I'm a Multisystems technician.
ENS. GUILLERMO
I'm the Weapons and Com system technician.
CAPT. BRANSON
Nice to meet you both do they always do that?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Sometimes but they're the best.
The a young female with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade show up with a PADD.
LTJG. FLOWER
Commander I'm still working on the power core systems but so far I'm a bit stumped, oh Captain sir I'm sorry I didn't know that you were here.
CAPT. BRANSON
Oh its alright Lieutenant?
LTJG. FLOWER Lieutenant Morgan Flower sir I'm the computer tech and linguistics translator for this team.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
She's very good at her job.
CAPT. BRANSON
Can't wait to see what you come up with Lieutenant.
LTJG. FLOWER
(nods)
Thank you sir.
He leaves as Kyle looks at her.
LTJG. FLOWER
Wow that's him that's Captain Branson.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Yeah.
EXT-WEYTAHN ORBIT
Camera moves towards the U.S.S. Enterprise who's in front of the Harrison.
INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE
Commander Ivanova is standing at the science station with T'Lar who's scanning and then she stands up and reports.
LTCMDR. T'LAR
Something appeared at the edge of our sensor scans.
Ivanova folds her arms.
CMDR. IVANOVA
Can you ID it T'Lar?
T'Lar runs the scan of the sensors and then reports.
LTCMDR. T'LAR
Its gone I do not understand I had it on long range scanners but it vanished.
CMDR. IVANOVA
What can you suspect T'Lar?
T'Lar puts her hands behind her back.
LTCMDR. T'LAR
Since the Andorians nor my people have the technology to shield a ship from sensors it could be that a third party is interested in our mission.
LTJG. MITCHELL
It could either be the Klingons or the Romulans.
CMDR. IVANOVA
(Tensed up)
Either the case Jack take us to Yellow alert T'Lar I want all sensors on the object use its last position as a guide.
LTCMDR. T'LAR
Aye, Commander.
LT. MASON
Aye, Commander.
Lights turn yellow and start flashing as Commander Ivanova is tensed up about the possibility of another fight with the Klingons or Romulans.

Act Two[]

EXT-WEYTAHN ORBIT
Both ships are in orbit.
INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE'S SITUATION ROOM
The senior staff are around the table as Commander Williams and Lieutenant Clarkson are briefing both senior officers from both vessels on the situation.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS: As you can see it will require a power transfer to get it back on-line, if we use the beam it will be able to bring the core back on-line.
Towe leans forward.
CAPT. TOWE
Mister Clarkson can the Harrison transfer its power to the core.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Its possible ma'am.
CAPT. TOWE
No its too risky with that unknown contact lurking about it would put both ships at risk, the Harrison can't handle another engagement with the Klingons or whoever is out there.
Branson walks over to them.
CAPT. BRANSON
How long will it take for you two to bring it on-line?
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Give me and Mister Clarkson a few hours.
CAPT. BRANSON
Do it.
They leave the briefing room as Captain Towe looks at him.
CAPT. TOWE
(Frustrated)
You are so dumb if that ship is out there we'll be wide open to an attack, that would result in the destruction of both ships!
Branson is nose to nose with Towe.
CAPT. BRANSON
We've got sensors on whatever is out there watching us so if that happens the Enterprise will prove protection for the Harrison.
CAPT. TOWE
Let's hope that your decision doesn't put our ships at risk.
She leaves the briefing room as Commander Ivanova who also remained walks over to her friend.
CMDR. IVANOVA
You know she's right John?
CAPT. BRANSON
(Sighs)
I know Susan, I know.
They both leave the briefing room.
CUT TO:
INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN ENGINEERING
The engineering staff are around the large screen as Commander Williams is issues instructions to her staff in a montage.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
All right, I need everyone's attention, please. What we've got here…
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
That's right and we need to find away to power it using Geothermal energy from the planets core.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
(Frustrated)
No, you're not listening to me!
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
It's not going to—
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
I'm telling you this one right here is wrong.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
The whole point here is that these numbers here need to be corrected.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Unless they're corrected—there you go. Simulation failed.
They keep running simulations that all file.
EXT—WEY'TAHN, NIGHT
INT—ANDORIAN POWER CORE FACILITY
The engineering team are working at different consoles.
In a tube-like passageway, Lieutenant Junior Grade Young and another scientist work. Clarkson speaks to her over the com.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(To com)
Carol I want you to pull the chip. Pull it when I say go, all right?
Lieutenant Young pulls the chip, and the power shuts down. Later, Clarkson is in the command access tube and Lieutenant Young and the rest of the team are in the main area.
LTJG. YOUNG
(to com)
I think we have it.
[Commander Clarkson puts the crystal in, and the command access tube lights up. In the lab, Carol smiles.]
LTJG. YOUNG
That's it!
EXT-WEY'TAHN ORBIT
The Enterprise and the Harrison are in orbit.
INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)
CAPT. BRANSON
(to com)
So you ready buddy?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(Com voice)
Yeah this is a great day for me and it should improve our relations with the Andorians.
CAPT. BRANSON

We'll monitor from here.
Kyle nods and the transmission ends.
INT-ANDORIAN POWER CORE FACILITY
Commander Clarkson and his team are in position and ready.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Everything's been triple-checked. Power levels are holding steady in all computer simulations.
CAPT. BRANSON
(com voice)
Power it up we're watching from here.
Commander Clarkson puts the com device down.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
All right. Attention, all personnel. Stand by for power-up on my mark. Three, two, one… Mark.
[The power source in the chamber powers up.]
CUT TO:
INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)
Engineering station reads that the core is powering up.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Core energy is at 140% and rising.

INT-USS HARRISON MAIN BRIDGE
LTCMDR. CARVUS
Confirmed Captain.
CMDR. MOR
So far so good.
CAPT. TOWE

Enterprise we're getting the same energy reading here as well.

Captain Branson presses the button on his left arm rest.

Acknowledged Harrison, Enterprise to Clarkson report?

Kyle opens his communicator.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON

Standby John, Pan talk to me?
LT. TARAK
I'm picking up some minor power fluctuations. Chamber temperature's holding steady. There it goes again.
CAPT. BRANSON
(com voice)
Is everything okay?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
Everything's fine.
INT-USS ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(Com voice)
The containment bottle was designed to automatically compensate for any sudden changes in energy output.
Williams turns to Captain Branson.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
(Confused)
This never happened in the simulations.
Captain Branson is looking over at the engineering console.
CAPT. BRANSON
(To com)
Kyle maybe we should abort.
CUT TO:
INT-ANDORIAN POWER CORE FACILITY
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
I said it's fine. Collins. See if you can boost more power to the field manually.
ENS. COLLINS
You got it.
Collins leaves. Clarkson makes more entries at his console, as Lieutenant Young is a bit worried.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Okay.
Collins enters the command access tube where the crystal controls are. He removes a panel. He's wearing protective glasses as the light is very bright.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(To com)<br?>
Clarkson to Enterprise.
CAPT. BRANSON
(com voice)
Branson here go ahead
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
I think we're ready.
CAPT. BRANSON
(Com voice)
We're still monitoring.
In the command access tube, a power wave bursts through the far wall and envelops Collins. He falls to the floor, screaming and writhing.
INT-USS HARRISON MAIN BRIDGE
LTCMDR. CARVUS
(surprised)
Something is going on down there ma'am.
CAPT. TOWE
(to com)
Towe to Enterprise are you getting the same thing?
CUT TO:
INT-USS ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)
CAPT. BRANSON

Standby Jamie Steph?
She checks her console read out as she is looking at the screen.
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Whoa.
CAPT. BRANSON
What is it Steph?
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
(Worried)
Levels just spiked into the red!
CAPT. BRANSON
(to com)
Enterprise to Clarkson Kyle we're getting something up here.
CUT TO:
INT-ANDORIAN POWER CORE FACILITY
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
We're getting it down here as well.
CAPT. BRANSON
(com voice)
Shut it down! Shut it all down!
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
I'm trying.
LT. TARAK
The interface is not responding.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Alright, I've already switched to back-ups.
LTJG. FLOWER
The levels are going off the scale sir!
INT-USS ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)
LTCMDR. WILLIAMS
Its on the verge of an overload!
CMDR. IVANOVA
RED ALERT, SHIELDS UP!
Lights dimmed and klaxons are sounding.
LTCMDR. T'LAR
We are about 30 seconds to overload.
CAPT. BRANSON
(to com)
Kyle get your team out of there now!
INT-ANDORIAN POWER CORE FACILITY
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
I have given the command to shut down. Something's creating an overload.
CAPT. BRANSON
(Com voice)
Then you an your team should evacuate
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
Just give me a few seconds.
CAPT. BRANSON (Com voice) We may not have that time
[The power sounds start to diminish, and Young's displays show the energy flow returning to green levels.]
LTJG. YOUNG
Wait. Wait. Wait. It's stabilizing. The generator is offline.
CAPT. BRANSON
(Com voice)
What the hell just happened?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
(to com)
Obviously there was a surge of some kind… Look, Collin…Collins!
[They rush to the command access tube door.]
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
Collins!
[They open the door to see Collins has died, his hands covered with red burns.]

Act Three[]

CAPT. BRANSON'S
(voice over)
Captain's Log
Stardate 5465.3,
After stopping an overload that nearly resulted in the destruction of the planet, the test has resulted in a death of a crewmen on the Harrison and we're currently determining what happened and how to prevent the next one from happening
INT-USS ENTERPRISE BRIEFING ROOM
Captains Branson and Towe, Commander Ivanova, Lieutenant Commanders Clarkson and Williams are around the table as Doctor Carlson is handing them PADDs of his autospy report on Ensign Collins.
DR. CARLSON
Officially, my report will indicate Ensign Collins died due to radiation exposure, causing severe burns to well over ninety percent of his body.
CAPT. BRANSON
But it was more than that?
DR. CARLSON
(Nods)
Yeah, much more. To be honest, I have no idea what sort of radiation it was. I've never seen or heard of cellular decay this massive, not when exposure only lasted mere seconds.
CMDR. IVANOVA
Ensign Collins next of kin has been notified of his death.
CAPT. BRANSON
Good what happened down there?
LTJG. YOUNG
(Confused)
We're still analyzing data from the test. All we know for certain was there was a massive power surge, which in turn caused the containment field to expand asymmetrically in the direction of the command access tube. As to why we're not sure.
Branson leans back in the chair.
CAPT. BRANSON
Have you found out what caused it yet?
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
No we're still going over the data.
CAPT. TOWE
Could we try again?
Both Captain Branson and Commander Ivanova turn to her.
CAPT. BRANSON
You want to try again?
CAPT. TOWE
(Nods)
Yes I do want to try again.
CMDR. IVANOVA
A member of Commander Clarkson's team is in the morgue.
LTCMDR. CLARKSON
And I am responsible for his death. Yes, I am painfully aware of that. I sent him to the facility, and I will have to live with that for the rest of my life.
CAPT. BRANSON
I'm sorry Jamie its not happening not till we figure out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again.
Towe turns to him.
CAPT. TOWE
(Scoffs)
Come on John we have a chance here to help them and improve relations with them.
Then the com activates.
LT. MASON
(Com voice)
Captain Branson to the bridge
They leave the briefing room as Captain Towe isn't a happy camper.
EXT-WEY'TAHN ORBIT
Three Andorian warships approach both ships aft.
INT-USS ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)
They enter the bridge as Lieutenant Mason vacates the command chair.
CAPT. BRANSON
This is a surprise.
LT. MASON
They just came up from aft.
CAPT. BRANSON
Hail them.
Lieutenant Smith inputs commands and turns to him.
LTJG. SMITH
They're responding.
Transparent viewer shows the bridge of the lead Andorian vessel.
CAPT. BRANSON
Greetings I'm John Branson Captain of the Starship USS Enterprise, don't be alarmed we're here at the request of Ambassador Thy'lek.
CAPT. TALA
(Viewer)
We're here at the request of the Andorian Imperial Command
Branson turns to Commander Ivanova confused then back to the viewer.
CAPT. BRANSON
(Sighs)
I wasn't aware that the Andorian Military force cared that much about seeing the Federation help them in repairing a power core for one of their colonies?
CAPT. TALA
(Viewer)
They are wanting to see what you can do
CAPT. BRANSON
Captain take it easy before you sprain something that can't be fixed by medical help, we're allies and we're here to help one of your colonies. But hey if you wanna watch us repair the power core go ahead and knock yourself out Enterprise out.
Transmission ends and the transparent viewer shows the three Andorian warships right behind the Enterprise and Harrison.
CMDR. IVANOVA
Charming woman.
CAPT. BRANSON
(Smiles)
If you say so, Susan if you say so.

EXT-WEY'TAHN ORBIT
The Enterprise and Harrison are in orbit as three Andorian Kumari-Class warships are with them as well.
INT-USS HARRISON CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM
CAPT. TOWE
Admiral I would like to request that we restart the repairs of the power core.
COMM. PIKE
(Monitor)
Captain I understand where you're coming from I do but right now we can't risk destroying that colony, I've already had to make a compromise for one colony I can't guarantee that I can make another one for this colony should the repairs turn into something bad
REAR ADM. TUCKER
(Monitor)
We can't risk playing it safe anymore Chris we don't know if the Klingons or the Romulans will attack us should they see that we're not getting upgrades by our most trusted ally
FLEET ADM. PERRY (Monitor) Let's not panic here alright

(Monitor)

Captain Branson is going over reports that Lieutenant Commander Williams has given him about the situation planetside, suddenly his old friend Kyle Clarkson bursts angrily through the door without knocking.
KYLE
(Frustrated)
What the hell are you thinking?
JOHN
(Confused)

KYLE
You know this mission is important for improving peaceful relations with the Andorians.
JOHN

KYLE
Who put you in charge, anyhow? The crew of the Harrison is more than capable of completing this mission without the oversight of amateurs?
JOHN
KYLE SIT DOWN!
Kyle, stunned but still angry, sits.
JOHN
Any other Captain would not tolerate your insubordination, but you are my best friend and I at least owe you an explanation. (Sits behind his desk and takes a deep breath to calm down) The Enterprise was given this mission by Commodore Pike, not the Harrison. Harrison was brought in merely to assist. One of the Andorian warships takes several bad hits and explodes in a fiery ball as debris flies from it and destroys the other Andorian vessel, but the Enterprise, Harrison and the lead Andorian Warship and the remaining Andorian cruiser was able to get their shields up or like the Enterprise already has their shields up.
