The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for assisting the chief engineer in the repair and maintenance of all ship's or station's systems. This includes pre-scheduled preventative maintenance, system upgrades and repairs to correct malfunctioning or damaged systems.

The Assistant Chief Engineer is a senior department position requiring a rank of Lieutenant or above, especially on large vessels.

On fleet carrier or heavy battleship type vessels, the Assistant Chief Engineer is usually a lieutenant commander.
