A Bird-of-Prey is a starship classification for smaller warships, usually resembling a predatory bird. The Klingon Empire and Romulan Star Empire were known for implementing bird-of-prey type starships.
The Bird-of-Prey served the combat role of a skirmisher, operating solo or in small groups as a scout, or making hit-and-run attacks on enemy positions. In larger fleet engagements it screened the vulnerable flanks of larger vessels such as battle cruisers. In this respect they were similar to Starfleet escorts.
