The Copernicus-class Starship was a ship design made in 2375 that almost wasn't approved. It was designed to be an improvement on the Constellation-class vessels of the late 23rd-century and early to mid 24th-century. Most ships of this class are designed to be Tactical frigates or Light cruisers.
Development and Creation[]
In 2372, Starfleet engineers started to notice that the Constellation-class had poor combat capabilities. Because of this, they decided to make a new starship that would revolutionize Starfleet ship designing. They decided that their ship would have to be a fast science vessel that also had good armaments. In late 2374, they presented their design to Starfleet Command. The debate on whether or not to commission this design was very heated. However, in 2375, they gave the green light. And thus, the Copernicus-class was created.
