The Eighth Fleet is the third largest fleet formation in Starfleet. It is commanded by Admiral Thomas Henry. The current flagship of the fleet is the Invincible-class Fleet Carrier-Command Battleship USS Indomitable.
Area of Responsibility[]
The Eighth Fleet has as its area of responsibility (AOR) that area of Federation space along the original borders of the Romulan Star Empire and the borders of the Klingon Empire.
Starbase 12 serves as the general headquarters of the fleet, which is located around the orbit and on the fourth planet in the Gamma 400 system, in Sector 25712, in the Beta Quadrant. It is the largest Federation asset in this region of space.
Expansion[]
The starships of the Eighth Fleet underwent massive retrofitting and refitting starting 2384 in order for them to be at par performance-wise with the new starships being commissioned by Starfleet following the rebuilding effort spearheaded by Fleet Admiral Leonard James Akaar and Fleet Admiral Max Hunter.
New starships were also attached to the Eighth Fleet to strengthen its ranks. By 2385 the fleet was divided into five (5) main task forces and a total of 296 combat-oriented starships, excluding special task forces and task forces assigned to defend the fleet's starbases and space stations.
Task force formations[]
The Eighth Fleet is composed of five main task forces.
- Task Force Indomitable, with the Invincible-class Fleet Carrier-Command Battleship USS Indomitable as flagship
- Task Force Suzerain, with the Jupiter-class Fleet Carrier USS Suzerain as flagship
- Task Force Tenacious, with the Katana-class Command Battleship USS Tenacious as flagship
- Task Force Fury, with the Katana-class Command Battleship USS Fury as flagship
- Task Force Knight, with the Katana-class Command Battleship USS Knight as flagship
Flag command[]
The Eighth Fleet is commanded by a full Admiral who serves in the capacity of Flag Officer-in-Command. This person is seconded by a vice Admiral who serves in the capacity of Deputy Flag Officer-in-Command. Another Vice Admiral serves in the capacity of Base Commander of the fleet's headquarters, Starbase 12.
