J.T. Esteban was a 23rd century Human Starfleet officer. In the 2280s, he held the rank of captain and commanded the USS Grissom. Esteban was killed, in 2285, when the Grissom was destroyed by Klingon attackers, over the Genesis Planet.
Alternate timeline[]
In an alternate 2285, where the Second Imperium rose to power, Esteban also commanded the Grissom.
After the outbreak of war and enormous losses sustained by Starfleet, a number of officers were considered for promotion and re-assignment.
Esteban was quickly elevated to commodore and was deemed suitable for an administrative position as apposed to fleet command. He retained command of Grissom, until his new assignment was cleared by Command.
It was during this interim period that Commander Nyota Uhura was transferred to the Grissom, and would serve as exec and captain-in-training, with the understanding that she would assume the captaincy. Although Uhura would not work under Esteban long, she found his command-style "tedious" and was relieved when his transfer was finally approved, wishing to instead take inspiration from her previous COs.
Esteban was made Commandant of Starfleet Academy, which was an assignment many agreed "fit him like a glove" and "overdue". With the new position came a rank increase to rear admiral.
