Kevin Thomas Riley was a 23rd century Human Starfleet officer. In 2266, he was a lieutenant, serving as a navigator on the USS Enterprise.
Alternate timeline[]
In an alternate 2285, Riley held the rank of commander and was a teacher at Starfleet Academy. He was divorced and struggled with alcoholism.
After the outbreak of war, many of the Enterprise senior officers were re-assigned, including Spock, leaving the captain's chair empty. It was decided that the old girl should remain a training vessel, attached to the Academy, with none other than Riley as her new CO.
Dr. McCoy expressed his concerns over this choice to Admiral Kirk, noting Riley's high blood alcohol levels and somewhat moody and erratic behaviour. Kirk, disappointed and concerned, decided to speak to Riley about it in private.
Kirk explained to Riley that the risks were too great at the moment and that much of the fleet was abstaining from liquor. He assured Riley that in peace time, the two of them would share a much deserved drink.
Kirk also noted, more firmly, that although Riley was being given command of the Enterprise, he would retain the rank of commander, until he has proven himself. Kirk also added that he had a special place in his heart for the Enterprise and that he expected Riley to take good care of his old ship.
Riley appreciated the pep talk and parted on good terms with Kirk, understanding the gravity of the situation. Riley, however, would continue to struggle with his urges and be a difficult man to work with.
