Krieger waves also known more scientifically as Cosmic Proton/Neutron waves are the primary energy source for many weapons and energy conversion based propulsion systems for many alien species throughout several galaxies even before current recorded history.
Named after the elements rediscoverer Dr. David Krieger in the early 1990s the containment and control of the waves energy in the modern era didn't occur until 2366 when physicist Nel Apgar developed a Krieger wave generator that used mechanics similar to Terran quantum heat generators in the hopes that the waves could be utilized as a possible peaceful energy source.
However the waves were mostly utilized as a heavy weapons power source for species such as the Husnock in the mid 24th century.
Element function[]
Krieger waves are a semi quantum fluidic wave of Protons and slower velocity superheated Neutrons. The wave bombards any form of basic atomic matter and renders the full structure fully and easily fissible, converting the mass into split atoms instantly transforming it into pure energy. Devastating not only the intended target but nearly destroying a several mile wide radius around it.
This makes the wave instantly classified as a Omega class weapon as a large usage of the element would not only the effect entire surface of a planet but the neighboring stellar system as well.
Element History[]
Usage of krieger waves goes as far back as before modern recorded history as the element was first encountered twice by the crew of the USS Enterprise first with the encounter with the outer galactic drone the "Planet Killer" as it seemed to be self propelled by a total energy converting propulsion drive that was fuelled by "ingesting" severed sections of nearby planets and converting them into pure energy.
The second was as on a away mission in 2270 they discovered a small collection of ancient artifacts used by the Thrintun or as they were known in antiquity as the "Slavers" as they utilized a hand phaser like weapon that had several settings each a differing weapon or tool. One of which was a Proton/Neutron energy beam that created a mass explosion with little radiation residue upon whatever it struck.
As noted earlier either utilization or research into Neutronic waves didn't occur until the mid 24th century when Dr Apgar attempted to create a generator, however due to the waves microwave like nature the device ended up destroying several Starbase bulkhead components and due to his paranoia that William Riker may be having a affair with his wife, attempted to kill him but it malfunctioned over reacting and killing him in the process.
It was because of this incident that Starfleet believed that the element was far too untested and unstable for mainstream use so the development project was dropped.
Warship Voyager History[]
In 2364 the Imperial Federation encountered the warlike species the Husnock, a species vaguely similar to the Terrans of their own universe. They fully utilized Krieger based weapons in both cannons and emitter arrays that should have made them a overwhelming force.
However they were held back by the outer galactic species the Douwd gifting some of the species that were in the immediate path of the conquerors biogenic based anti Neutronic shields to repel their attacks. Imperial Starfleet managed to overcome the devastating power of the weapons by adapting their transporters Heisenburg compensator to control the energy impact and Neutron interactions with their Heavy particle shields.
