L'taL Rachel Shield was the daughter of Edward J. Shield, and K'hallA, daughter of Azetbur. Half-Human and half-Klingon.

L'taL was given a position on the USS Intrepid, until she discovered that it was part of an elaborate ploy by Starfleet to use her DNA to resurrect by cloning her paternal grandfather. When she discovered this, she tried to inform the Federation Council, but was ordered to be executed, claiming that DNA could be salvaged from her dead body as well.
Despite her hatred of her mother (she didn't know her father), L'taL went searching for the USS Enterprise-C, hoping to gain asylum. The cloning went underway eventually and was later executed.
