The Memory Project began in 2235 and stated that four facilities would be constructed to house the knowledge of Federation member worlds. The project charter provided that these were to be open, undefended centers of knowledge, which could be visited by all beings. The number of facilities was later expanded and the purpose of each facility evolved with each expansion, but the purpose of the project remained the same. All the facilities were connected to a central core and control facility at Memory Prime.
