Microdiffracted carbon hull coating was a type of dark coating added on to the hulls of combat-oriented Ffederation Starfleet starships so that the ship's hull could absorb all visible radiation that fell upon it, making it as black as the space it moved through, thus providing it with stealth capabilities without resorting to cloaking devices.
The USS_Monitor_(Defiant_class)_(I) was a Defiant-class starship that was the first to receive microdiffracted carbon hull coating and fitted with a transwarp drive before it was assigned a covert mission to destroy the Borg Homeworld in 2371.
It has since been used on the Defiant-class, Saber-class, Steamrunner-class, Norway-class, Valiant-class, Prometheus-class, Akira-class, Vesta-class, Sovereign-class, Luna-class, Jupiter-class and Katana-class starships of the Vanguard Fleet and Vanguard Command.
