Petty officer first class is the sixth enlisted rank in the Federation Starfleet. The rank is higher than a petty officer second class and lower than a chief petty officer. The rank is the fourth highest that can be attained by a non-commissioned Starfleet officer. Personnel having this rank are referred to as "Petty Officer One" or "PO1" in most circumstances.
Like the petty officer second class and petty officer third class, advancement to the rank of petty officer first class is contingent upon the several conditions, namely:
- At least three years as a petty officer second class, or two years if the petty officer received a promotion recommendation of "early promote" from the commanding officer.
- Recommended for advancement by the commanding officer.
- Have an established Performance Mark Average.
- Has pending request for voluntary transfer to the Starfleet Reserve.
Petty officers first class normally serve as a Leading Petty Officer (LPO) of a division, and may direct the activities of a division in the absence of the division Chief Petty Officer.
Petty officers serve a dual role as both technical experts and as leaders. Unlike the crewmen below them, there is no such thing as an "undesignated petty pfficer." Every petty officer has both a rank and a rating. A petty officer's full title is a combination of the two.
