Photonic cannon is a primary heavy weapons system placed aboard all Imperial Federation special ops. Warships and earlier on in the early 23rd century in Federation starships such as the Walker class and is used as either a weapon of heavy offense or a Heavy Utility System. A photonic cannon is placed in an array similar to a deflector dish/array.
System mechanics[]
The photonic cannon uses mechanics very similar to the pulse phaser, except that it utilizes a stream of Heavy resonance photon particles that become super-energized by a solidified Electron Crystal sphere encased in a heavy EM confinement beam jacket attached to the center of the beams' emitter. Twin beams fire from the array in a lightning like fashion due to the super electromagnetics.
Force blast capacity[]
The Photonic cannon has a heavy blast capacity of:
- Low blast range: Blastwave range: 20 mil.
- Medium blast range: Blastwave range: 420 mil.
- Heavy (maximum) Blast range: Blastwave range: 1 Large planetoid or moon
Heavy utility uses[]
A Photonic cannon can also be used as a:
- Heavy demolitions' system, used of moving, destroying or quickly moving a large celestial body(s).
History[]
Photonic cannons possibly originate from a technical database gathered by a Mizarian think tank within the Terran Empire at some point in the 2230s.
Then imperial Fleet Captain Gabriel Lorca used this and several advanced weapons systems for usage on a new series of Terran imperial assault ships known as "Blade".
After Lorca's accidental transference to the Prime universe, Lorca took advantage of the current events of the escalating war between the Klingon Empire and the Federation and had given Starfleet several military advancements from the Mizarian database to bolster the fleet.
Ship classes such as Walker and some limited Section 31 ships were first equipped with Photonic cannons as well as prototype Phaser lances for heavy combat weaponry.
However, after Lorca's return to his own reality, it was revealed that his inclusion of anachronistic technology was part of a subtle plot to possibly take power over the Federation. After which, Starfleet Command ordered that most of Lorca's directed advancements to be removed and kept classified for well over a century.
Interestingly, in the late mid 24th century the Emergency Medical Hologram of the USS Voyager was experimenting with imagination had "daydreamed" a photonic cannon in one of his fantasies of commanding the ship. It could be possible that either he could have accidentally accessed secure records from the ship's computer core and had randomly generated a cannon, or it could have been purely coincidental, however as of now the guess of either is purely conjectural.
By the late 2380s photonic cannons were reinstated as standard heavy weapons due to the advancement of ship stability in the firing process of recoil. Starting with some later developed refit Intrepid class vessels, the cannons were installed as deflector centered or turret based defense munitions.
