The starbases, deep space stations and planet-based bases of Vanguard Command are ably defended by the starships of Station Defense Task Force. The primary mission of the starships of this division is to protect the Starfleet space stations they are assigned to. They are under the overall command of the Deputy Flag Officer-in-Command of Vanguard Command Anastassia Folonova through Vanguard Command's Chief of Starfleet Security Rear Admiral Syrath Zh'tirik. But their deployment and movement is directly supervised by the stations' respective command staff.
Background[]
Being the bases of operations of the different sector commands of Vanguard Command, the seven headquarters, bases and sub-stations under it required the means to interdict and intercept any starship or group of starships with hostile intent that might threaten the lives and property of the station's residents and habitues.
Considering the size and strategic importance of these Federation stations, a starship complement that is larger in number than what is usually assigned to a Federation starbase was needed. This led Fleet Admiral Maximus Hunter, Flag Officer-in-Command of Vanguard Command and Vanguard Fleet, to form the Station Defense Task Force.
Station Defense Task Force composition[]
As a whole division under Starfleet Security of Vanguard Command, the Station Defense Task Force is composed of 117 starships and 846 tactical flyers, namely:
- Seven (7) Prometheus-class Assault Cruisers
- Seventeen (17) Defiant-class Tactical Frigates
- Ninety-three (93) Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes
- 846 Valkyrie-class Advanced Tactical Fighters

Command structure[]
Administratively, the whole of station defense task force is under the command of Rear Admiral Syrath Zh'tirik, but operationally, each station defense task force unit is under the command of the deputy base commander of the sector commands.
Each of the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates are commanded by officers with the minimum rank of Lieutenant Commander, while the Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes are commanded by officers with the minimum rank of Lieutenant.
Deployment[]
Starships of the Station Defense Task Force are usually deployed for patrol missions to within ten light years from home base or station. Only on very special situations, when no other ship under Vanguard Command is available, are these allowed to travel beyond ten light years.
