Combat continues through 2374 and the eighth season of Star Trek: Infinite Voyages. In the early months, it seems the Dominion is gaining the upper hand. However, the first major alliance victory of the war comes several months later, as the Bajor sector, including Deep Space 9, is recaptured in Operation Return. A short lull in hostilities follows, during which Sho Sakura proposes marriage to Adriana Watley on the USS Pioneer. She accepts, but suggests they wait until after the war to marry.
Unfortunately, near the end of the year, Dominion forces invade and occupy Betazed. The fall of Betazed—which leaves Vulcan, Andoria, Tellar Prime, and Alpha Centauri open to capture themselves—has a profound effect on many aboard the Pioneer, though none more than Watley, the daughter of a Betazoid mother and a half Betazoid father. Though her parents live off-world, all of her grandparents have lived on Betazed for years.
