Star Trek: Thunderclap Season 2 Episode 1: "In the Eyes of Chronos"

Synopsis[]

The crew of the Thunderclap encounter a man claiming to be former captain Henry Jacobson in a shuttlecraft identified to be authentically from the ship.

Chapter 1[]

Bridge, USS Thunderclap, June 16, 2435, 1130 hours

The mood on the bridge of the Thunderclap was difficult to determine. There was an air of silence and almost boredom permeating the room. It had been a consistent companion of the crew as of late, ever since the attack on the Centaran station. Still, it was preferable to be adrenaline-fueled terror as half a dozen Centaran ships bared down on them.

"Status report." commanded Harris as he stared out into the stars, propping his head up with a hand.

Kelwood piped up, "Sir, I'm afraid we haven't detected much for the past hour."

"Well, what have we detected, Mr. Kelwood?", inquired Harris with a slight eyeroll.

"Nothing but regular background radiation, a few small asteroids, and some stray subatomic particles. The usual."

At that moment, Ensign Redflower's console beeped. "Captain, I'm picking up a distress call." he turned from his console to face the captain, a slight expression of surprise adorning his features. "On a Starfleet signature."

"Where from?" Harris questioned. He was starting to feel as if he had done nothing but ask questions all morning.

"A small vessel. It's just come into sensor range...that's odd..."

"What is it?"

The ensign looked puzzled as he responded, "Well, according to this, its power signature is strikingly similar to one of our shuttlecraft."

"'Ours' as in..."

"Us, sir. The Thunderclap."

Now it was Harris' turn to look puzzled. "We shouldn't have any shuttles out right now. Check the manifest."

Redflower complied, and after a few moments replied, "Manifest's clear. No shuttles are missing from the bay, captain."

"Can you get it into visual range?", asked Harris, standing up with a mild spring to his step. This was beginning to look like a mystery, and if there was one thing he was fond of, it was mysteries.

"I believe so, sir," replied Redflower, "Just give me a moment..." The vessel appeared on the viewscreen, and yep, that was definitely a Starfleet shuttlecraft.

"Huh, Definitely one of ours." commented Krigins, who had been silent up to this point. He squinted at the viewscreen. "Anyone home?"

Now it was Kyla's turn to speak up. "Well, the sensors aren't picking up any life signs." she explained.

"You don't sound particularly convinced of that, Kyla." Harris pointed out. The science officer huffed.

"Tell me about it. There's some pretty weird interference surrounding the shuttle. It's screwing up my scans. There could be nobody aboard or it could be carrying an entire squad of Centarans."

Kelwood shuddered. "Did you have to add that last part?"

She flashed him an entirely too innocent smile. "No." Kelwood just glared.

"Now, now, you two." Harris interjected half-heartedly. "Be nice."

"Hey, do you see that?" Krigins spoke before either the conn or science officer could say anything. He was squinting at the viewscreen. "On the shuttle. Looks like writing. Think we can zoom in?"

Harris was also squinting at it. "You're right. Maximum magnification, please, Ethan." he ordered.

"Aye, captain." the image flickered, and the text on the side of the vessel became legible. "HAWKING - NX-97280 - U.S.S. THUNDERCLAP". Ok, that couldn't be right.

"I thought you said all of our shuttles were still in the bay?" Krigins inquired to Redflower, left eyebrow raised. The ensign turned to him, mirroring his expression.

"They are."

"...so where'd that one come from?"

"Good question." Harris cut in. "Lets find out. Krigins, bring the tractor beam online. Reel her in."

"Aye, captain." the screen was filled with the blue glow of the tractor beam, dragging the wayward shuttle into the bay with a low hum. Harris, meanwhile, turned to Kyla.

"Any ideas?"

"A few." she responded. "It could be displaced in time, or maybe it's a quantum duplicate. Can't be sure though until I run a full analysis."

Harris nodded. "Guess that means you're coming down to the shuttle bay with me."
