Sub-station Abraxis Five, or Abraxis Five was a Fort-class deep space orbital sub-station designed by Starfleet in the late 24th century. It was a highly defensible outpost with the specific purpose of functioning as satellite base of operations to deep space stations in the furthest limits of known space. As of 2385 Abraxis Five was the most remote fully crewed deep space Federation installation in operation.
Location[]
Abraxis Five was located in the asteroid belt of the Lokaran Star System, about 300 light years from the farthest borders of the Alliance of Gamma Quadrant Planets in the Gamma Quadrant, facing rimwards towards the boundaries of the Alpha Quadrant. It would take a starship at least 120 days at Warp 9 non-stop to reach any of the three other sub-stations of Abraxis Command from Abraxis Five.

Background[]
Abraxis Five was the last sub-station of Abraxis Command constructed. Its pre-fabricated components and crew were brought to its current location by the ships of Task Force Perseverance and was constructed by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers personnel onboard the Hephaestus-class Support Carrier USS Hephaestus with the help of a few Khronnian ships.
Function[]
Like the other Fort-class sub-stations, Abraxis Five had two official functions:
- Science research, astrometrics and defense – Fort-class orbital outposts are equipped with advanced long range sensor arrays that gather information on stellar phenomena and starship movements over a large area of space, roughly 30 light years away from the outpost.
- Diplomacy – Though not as expansive as space stations, Fort-class orbital outposts have several dedicated diplomatic facilities for functions with friendly or allied races that are within 5 light years from the outpost.
In addition, it also served as:
- Subspace communications relay and listening post for Abraxis Command, Vanguard Command Headquarters, and Abraxis Command.
- Frequent port of call and staging point of Task Force Perseverance.
Key features[]
Abraxis Five was composed of one central hull and six saucer shaped hangar pods with landing pads on top that could accommodate several visiting medium-size starships, runabouts, and shuttlecrafts at a single time. The hangar pods are primarily used as storage and cargo facilities. Visiting starships that were experiencing shortage in deuterium, dilithium, or other ship supply needs could be catered to by the contents of these pods. The contents were regularly replenished by one of the Wallenberg-class transports attached to Station DSG1 that had been installed with a quantum slipstream drive, the USS Homer.
The cone-shaped middle section at the center of Abraxis Five was the habitat section, where the operations center, science labs, common areas, several offices, living quarters, function rooms, recreational facilities, computer systems, and main engineering were located.
The station was powered by four Mark-XIII fusion reactors, and had a further two as backups.
Task force support[]
The starships and squadrons of Task Force Perseverance frequently return to Abraxis Five for repairs, resupplies and shore leave after several months of exploration.
During Condition Red-1, if Strike Group Two was close enough, its ships would assume rear positions at Abraxis Five because its external holographic emitters could be expanded to hide them within their field of coverage. In addition, the outposts, considerable firepower provides additional protection for the starships.

The Rapid Reaction Force starships assigned to Station DSG1, the USS Rob Roy and the USS Samagar were the starships that frequented Abraxis Five the most, usually escorting the USS Homer in its supply runs.

When needing extra firepower against hostile ships, the alternate flagship of Task Force Dauntless, the Odyssey-class Command Battleship USS Implacable would come to the aid of Abraxis Five.

Station defense[]
Abraxis Five has an arsenal of 16 Type-XII rotary-mounted pulse phaser cannons, 16 Type-XII stationary-mounted phaser emitters, 6 Type-XII slide-mounted phaser emitters, and 12 torpedo launchers. It has a torpedo payload of 50 transphasic torpedoes, 500 quantum torpedoes and 1,000 high-yield photon torpedoes.
The outpost was protected by enhanced, regenerative, redundant and reinforced multiphasic, multispectrum unimatrix defensive shields, ablative hull armor, and regenerative ablative armor plating, making it nearly impervious to phaser fire and torpedoes.
It was also installed with thoron shield generators that provided a seamless energy casing around the outpost, on the inner sides of the rings, with a separate shell around the Command Center. The thoron-based screen interfered with Abraxis Five’s long-range communications and sensors, but functioned as a protective envelope far stronger than typical shields, defending against not only energy weapons and transporter beams, but also actual material objects. While it would not render Abraxis Five impregnable, it could allow the outpost to withstand some attacks better and longer than traditional shields.
Abraxis Five was also equipped with external holographic emitters which give the outpost the ability to alter its appearance by disguising itself as another object, such as an asteroid.
Personnel complement[]
Abraxis Five has a full Starfleet complement of 800 personnel. 160 are officers and 640 are enlisted. Excluding the station complement, it can provide comfortablec living space for 1,000 temporary inhabitants.
Operations Center[]
An operations center (also known as Ops) was the command and control facility of the outpost. Ops was a circular area located at the topmost habitable deck of the outpost's main structure. It contained, among other things, the commander's office, a turbolift, a transporter, and a viewscreen. At the center of the main room was the command table and the station operations consoles. Surrounding this were the dedicated multi-consoled alcoves for the science station, the tactical station, and the engineering station.
Docking Facilities[]
Abraxis Five could house up to 10 runabout-sized craft and 20 shuttle-sized craft inside each of its six saucer-shaped hangar pods and a Merian-class-sized starship on top.
Umbilicals could be extended from the landing zone on each saucer pod to allow external docking of ships of any size, though such docking methods would obscure the pod's vehicle lift and prevent any other craft from docking or taking off from that pod.
The station's configuration allowed the internal berthing of a vessel of up to 400 meters in length, with the central hull 480 meters in diameter and 325 meters high, with 60 habitation decks.
Many visiting capital ships that come to Abraxis Five would merely request a nearby holding position and be serviced by transporter, shuttle, or workpod, depending on its needs.
Computer systems[]
Abraxis Five was equipped with some of the most advanced computer systems of the time. It utilized bio-neural circuitry circuitry and is equipped with three independent computer cores. The bio-neural circuitry speeds up the computer's data functions and improved overall performance.
Abraxis Five had 12 personnel transporters with 6 transporter stations and a maximum range of 42,000 km., 8 cargo transporters, and 12 20-person emergency transporters.
Communications array[]
In its role as a satellite base of operations in deep space, the outpost's advanced communications array allows the outpost commander to relay critical information instantaneously to the sector commander and all elements of Starfleet in the general vicinity.
Emergency holographic complement[]
The Abraxis Five was equipped with holo-emitters on every level and area to allow emergency holographic programs a higher level of access and free movement. The station’s computer systems can simultaneously bring the following online:
- 1 Long-term Command Hologram (LCH), named "Jim"
- 1 Long-term Security and Tactical Hologram (LSTH), named "Gar"
- 2 Long-term Engineering Holograms (LEH), named "Monty" and "Pavel"
- 1 Long-term Medical Hologram (LMH), named "Leonard"
- 1 Long-term Health Care Hologram (LHCH), named "Christine"
- 1 Long-term Science Hologram (LSH), named "Spock"
- 1 Long-term Hospitality Hologram (LHH), named "Breil"
The emergency holographic programs on Abraxis Five attached to Vanguard Command were made to stay online indefinitely for them to evolve and grow as members of the outpost crew.
Astrometrics & Stellar Cartography[]
Abraxis Five featured a fully equipped Astrometrics lab, which was not only dedicated to the science and practice of charting space but could also be used for long-range communications purposes or even, as a workplace for easy access to short and long-range sensor information.
Accommodations[]
Abraxis Five does not usually have families or non-Starfleet personnel on station but does not prohibit it. As was common on almost all Starfleet facilities and vessels, the living accommodations for senior officers and VIPs are larger than standard crew quarters. They were generally reserved for lieutenant commanders and above. Outpost commander's quarters are like the officers' quarters but were slightly larger. The outpost commander has a large desk area and work terminal. The few VIP and diplomatic guest quarters on the outpost share the same layout.
Officers' quarters usually include a living area in the center of the dwelling, which held a personal workstation, couch, replicator, and a small dining area. Connected to this is a bedroom that features a double-sized bed and room for personal belongings. The bedroom is connected by a half-bathroom with wash basin, mirror, toilet, several drawers, and a sonic shower.
Junior officers' quarters are small-unit quarters. They are comprised of a living area, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Crew members of lieutenant junior grade are given their own quarters; ensigns and non-commissioned officers were required to share quarters and share living areas with other pairs. The living area contains a replicator terminal and is customizable with a variety of furniture and decorations.
All crew quarters line the edge of the outpost and have windows that provide a view of space outside.
Recreational facilities[]
Abraxis Five featured five main mess halls that have galleys. Each serve as social centers of the station and was managed by a galley staff. Each had a battery of recreational games including three-dimensional chess as well as a fully stocked bar which carried syntheholic beverages. The replicators were also able to produce other food and drinks for the crew to enjoy in a relaxed social setting. Its large, panoramic windows permitted a staggering view of the Lokaran Star System.
Below the living quarters section of the outpost's personnel, also lining the edge of the outpost's hull, was the station housing for civilians and non-Starfleet personnel. And below that was the "Avenue", a wide, multi-level commercial and service area, which was the hub of social activity on Abraxis Five featuring many shops and services for its crew, residents and visitors.
Abraxis Five was equipped with 12 holodecks, 18 holosuites, and one full gymnasium, which contains a variety of recreational equipment for a variety of sports.
Ship support and auxiliary craft complement[]
Following new tactical and defensive protocols instituted by Starfleet Command and Vanguard Command, Abraxis Five was provided with the following support ship and auxiliary craft complement:
Defense -
- The Defiant-class Tactical Frigate USS Sacagawea
- The Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes USS Yatagan and USS Khanjar
- 9 Valkyrie-class advanced tactical flyers. This is equivalant to one squadron.

Each of these auxiliary ships had microdiffracted carbon hull coating and sensor stealth systems, as well as stronger shields and double the payload of quantum mini-torpedoes.
Command and senior staff[]
The following Starfleet personnel serve as the command staff of Abraxis Five:
- Captain Kahlil Deleon, the Station Commander
- Commander Akura Ren, an unjoined female Trill, the Deputy Station Commander
- Commander Brol Baranov, a male half Human-half Klingon, the Second Officer and fleet commander of the station defense task force.
Patrol missions[]
Perhaps the two most frequent patrol group combination deployed by Captain Deleon to patrol the star systems around Abraxis Five was that of the USS Khanjar leading one Venture-class scout ship and two Yellowstone-class runabouts and that of one USS Yatagan leading two Andes-class heavy runabouts.
