A support carrier is generally defined as a defensively armed ship in the Federation Starfleet whose mission was to assist the "fighting forces" of the unit. The main characteristic of support carriers was its capacity to carry a few squadrons of tactical flyers onboard for easy deployment against hostile elements. Other characteristics of support carriers were its capacity to act as troop transports, supply ships, or special mission ships.

The Mulciber class starship was a class of starship that fall under the designation of support carrier. One ship of this class, the USS Achilles (NCC-77024), was assigned to Project Full Circle's fleet and refitted with quantum slipstream drive in 2381. It was tasked with holding spare parts and equipped with industrial replicators which would be used by the whole fleet.

Among the Support Carriers in Starfleet were:

The support carrier role was assumed by the newly constructed Hephaestus-class starship, which was as long as the Mulciber class and possessed a similar structural design, but with more support capacities. It had only one-third the pure cargo capacity of the Mulciber, but instead had the same facilities as a Galen class hospital ship, a Theophrastus class science ship, a Nova-class science ship, a Akira-class flyer carrier. The Hephaestus class still carried the same number of industrial replicators, starship spare parts and non-replicatable cargo as its Mulciber cousin.
