The Tal Shiar was the secretive intelligence agency of the Romulan Star Empire, and was the most highly respected and feared organization within the state. Their main objective was to protect the Empire's security from both external and internal threats using whatever means necessary. Members were trained at the Romulan Intelligence Academy.

History

In the Cryptic universe, the Tal Shiar evolved to become very nearly the Empire's primary military force in the years after the destruction of Romulus in 2387. Although a certain rivalry sometimes existed between the self-proclaimed Empress Sela and the Tal Shiar, the agency basically served as her means of projecting power internally and externally. As such, the Tal Shiar became even more ruthless and secretive after the Hobus supernova.
