Tarok (full name S'chn T'yin Tarok) was a Vulcan Starfleet officer in the 23rd century and early 24th century. He was commanding officer of the USS Axanar (NCC-1847).
Biography[]
Early life[]
Tarok was born in 2222 in the Vulcan colony of Merak II. The Tarok family took a more liberal view of Surak's teachings and therefore raised their children without the emphasis on suppressing emotion, which was only possible away from the planet Vulcan. Tarok and his brothers were raised at home, so the path to the Vulcan Science Academy was closed to him. Tarok was named after his father's brother, who worked on the Vulcan's trade mission. Tarok's family was associated with political extremists who believed it was logical for Vulcan and its colonies to be independent of the Federation. His other uncle, Sered, was a proponent of reunification with the Romulans.
From his early youth, Tarok had a special interest in technology and military affairs. He was also drawn to the history of ancient Vulcan, which most Vulcans consider shameful.
At the end of 2239, Tarok applied to the Starfleet Academy for two faculties — engineering and navigation. He was accepted into both faculties, but only had to choose one. Tarok chose piloting because it is easier to get into command courses in this branch. In April 2240, Tarok traveled to Earth, to San Francisco, with the intention of passing the exams and entering the Starfleet Academy.
Starfleet Academy[]
From 2240 to 2244, Tarok was a student at Starfleet Academy. Tarok studied piloting, navigation, combat tactics, and stellar cartography. He graduated from command courses with honors.
During his third year at the Academy, he completed an internship on the USS Republic (NCC-1371). He perfectly mastered battle tactics and repeatedly took command of a starship. At the end of the practice, Admiral Marcus Ramirez wrote Tarok a positive review. He likely influenced Tarok's assignment to the USS Ares (NCC-1650).
Four Years War[]

Ensign Tarok. Tactical Officer on USS Ares. 2244
Ensign Tarok's first assignment was as a junior tactical officer on the USS Ares under the command of Captain Kelvar Leonard Garth. Ares's first mission was to test all the ship's systems in combat. The Ares took part in Operation Pegasus off the planet Cygnus III. During the battle with the Klingon D6 cruisers, the chief tactical officer was seriously wounded, and Ensign Tarok was called to the bridge. He replaced the wounded tactician and proved himself to be a brilliant marksman and master of evasive maneuvers. After a successful operation, Captain Garth ordered Tarok to be transferred to bridge Alpha shift.
In 2244, the Ares-class flotilla, in a swift thirty-day campaign, recaptured three star systems from the Klingons — Epsilon Ceti B, Beta Rigel, Nausicaa. During these battles, the chief tactical officer on the USS Ares was Ensign Tarok.
In 2245, Tarok was transferred to the USS T'Val (NCC-1655) at the request of the Vulcan, as part of the formation of an all-Vulcan crew of one of the Ares-class warships.
After stardate 2245.1, Tarok returned to the crew of the Ares and resumed his position as Chief Tactical Officer.
On stardate 2245.5 the Battle of Lea took place. USS Ares and two Larson-class destroyers were ambushed by D4 cruisers of the 127th Klingon Squadron. The Ares was seriously damaged, and one of the Larson-class starships was destroyed. Tactical officer Tarok, under the orders of Captain Garth, masterfully used Cochrane deceleration maneuver, saving Starfleet ships.
On stardate 2245.7, the USS Ares led the Starfleet armada at the Battle of Axanar.
Following the Federation's victory in the Four Years War, Tarok was awarded the Federation Medal of Valor and promoted to lieutenant.
USS Constitution[]

In 2246, Lieutenant Tarok was transferred to the new heavy cruiser USS Constitution (NCC-1700) under the command of Captain Kelvar Garth. Tarok took over as senior navigator officer. In this capacity, Tarok participated in Constitution's five-year research mission.
On stardate 2246.117, Lieutenant Tarok and Junior Science Officer Ensign Dean Forester were stranded on the unstable volcanic planet Alpha Omicron 4 due to a transporter failure. After being on the planet for several days, Tarok began to develop a neurochemical imbalance and a fever. Dean Forester, using his knowledge of Vulcan physiology, was able to save the officer. After this incident, Tarok and Forester became friends. Much later, in 2264, Lieutenant Commander Forester became the Chief Science Officer on the USS Axanar under the command of Captain Tarok.
In 2249, Tarok became temporary first officer due to the lack of a better candidate for the position. During this period, Tarok actually co-authored the book “Garth of Izar on Tactics”. In this book he is called a tactical consultant and on the first page he is thanked by the author.
In 2251, at the end of a five-year mission, Garth became the commanding officer of the USS Heisenberg (NCC-1251). Tarok decided not to go under the command of the new captain of the Constitution and submitted a transfer report.
USS Enterprise and USS Intrepid[]
Lieutenant Tarok served briefly aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) as helmsman and was present at the transfer of command from Robert April to Christopher Pike.
For the next year, Tarok served aboard the Vulcan ship USS Intrepid (NCC-1631). Tarok's relationship with his fellow Vulcans did not work out right away; Captain Spiak soon transferred Tarok to Gamma shift, thereby offending him. Already in March 2253, Tarok decided to leave the Vulcan ship.
Return to Starfleet Academy[]
From 2254 to 2255, Lieutenant Commander Tarok served as a flight instructor at Starfleet Academy at the invitation of Admiral Sonia Alexander.

One of Tarok's students was fourth-year cadet James T. Kirk. When Cadet Kirk successfully passed the Kobayashi Maru test, Vulcan Lieutenant T'Laan, who created the scenario, accused the cadet of altering the program in his favor. At the Academy Council hearing, Tarok defended Kirk, pointing out his original thinking, and T'Laan insisted on expelling the cadet. In many ways, it was Tarok's position that swayed the admirals in favor of James and saved him from expulsion from Starfleet Academy. For Kirk's graduation, Tarok gave him his paper copy of "Garth of Izar on Tactics" (this book was part of Kirk's collection until at least 2273).
On stardate 2255.06, Tarok attended the decommissioning ceremony for the USS Ares (NCC-1650) at Starbase 1.
Second Federation-Klingon War (2256–2257)[]
In 2256, Lieutenant Commander Tarok was transferred to the USS Kerala (NCC-1255) as First Officer.
On May 11, the Kerala, along with the other nine ships of Admiral Brett Anderson's flotilla, participated in the Battle of the Binary Stars. During the battle, Captain Erick Singh died, and Tarok took command of the ship. After the battle, Tarok led the damaged USS Kerala to Starbase 12.
In late 2256, Admiral James Komack officially ordered Tarok to take command of the Kerala, due to a shortage of command officers during the war. In February 2257, the USS Kerala defended Starbase 12 from an attack by three Klingon D7-class cruisers.
The USS Kerala, part of the fleet, was sent to protect Starbase 1 in Earth orbit when Klingons from House D'Ghor attacked and occupied the space station, killing 80,000 of its inhabitants.
USS Defiant[]
After the Second Klingon War, Tarok hoped to remain as the commanding officer of the USS Kerala, but Starfleet Command considered such a decision premature. Tarok was promoted to commander and assigned as first officer of the USS Defiant (NCC-1764) under the command of El-Aurian Captain John Ventar.
Captain[]
USS Andromeda[]
In 2260 Tarok was promoted to captain and assigned command of the USS Andromeda (NCC-1447), Crossfield-class.
The trial of Captain Garth[]
In 2260, Captain Tarok participated in the court-martial of Fleet Captain Kelvar Garth for the double murder of the crew of the USS Heisenberg and attempted genocide on Antos IV. Tarok gave a positive description of Captain Garth, speaking on the defense side. As a result, Garth of Izar was found guilty and mentally ill and was sent to a mental hospital on Elba II.
Loss of USS Andromeda[]
In 2263, as a result of tragic events near the planet [DATA EXPUNGED], Captain Tarok decided to announce the evacuation of the entire crew and left the USS Andromeda. The USS Andromeda is believed to still be drifting in the [DATA EXPUNGED] sector. All Starfleet captains are prohibited from entering this sector or boarding the USS Andromeda.
In late 2263, Tarok was court-martialed for his actions in the [DATA EXPUNGED] sector. Tarok was charged with violating the Prime Directive, murder and negligence leading to the loss of the Federation ship. In the first minutes of the meeting, he announced the need for a closed tribunal over him. His request was approved and further materials from the case of Captain Tarok were classified. As a result, Tarok was acquitted. The crew of the starship signed a protocol on non-disclosure of details of the events of the mission in the [DATA EXPUNGED] sector. Presumably, the USS Andromeda discovered a dangerous space-time anomaly that influenced the development of the civilization of a secret planet. Further investigation into this incident was likely redirected to Section 31.
It is rumored that the entire crew of the Andromeda had their memories of this incident erased and only Captain Tarok, his First officer and the Chief medical officer retained their memories, however this is unlikely.
USS Axanar[]
2264[]
On January 4, 2264, Captain Tarok took command of the USS Axanar (NCC-1847) and began a five-year mission.
The Axanar was a second generation Constitution-class ship. Initially, this ship was planned to be named Tempest, but since it came under the command of the hero of the Battle of Axanar, it was decided to name the starship in honor of this planet that was significant for the Federation.

2267[]
In 3198.4, USS Axanar, along with USS Constitution, USS Enterprise, USS Lexington (NCC-1709), USS Excalibur (NCC-1664), and six other Constitution-class and two Miranda-class starships, headed to Organia IV to intercept the Klingon fleet there. The conflict was eventually resolved by the Organians themselves without further casualties on either side.
2269[]
On stardate 5775.8, the USS Axanar visited the Elba II asylum, three weeks after Kelvar Garth attempted to abandon it by hijacking the Enterprise. Captain Tarok met with his former mentor and spoke with him for two hours, making sure that the rehabilitation was going well and Captain Garth's mind was on the mend.
Two weeks later, the USS Axanar arrived at Tarok's homeworld of Merak II, ravaged by a botanical plague. The crew was ordered to provide all possible assistance to the inhabitants of the colony and wait for the USS Enterprise, which was supposed to bring zenite ore, a mineral needed to treat the plague. On stardate 5819.4, USS Axanar and USS Enterprise met in orbit of Merak II (prior to this, the Enterprise visited the cloud city of the planet Ardana on the orders of the Federation, where, after a series of switches, they received ore).
Personality Profile[]
Tarok inherited from his parents a skeptical attitude towards the teachings of Surak. Tarok did not try to suppress emotions and showed them when appropriate. Tarok was indifferent to Vulcan traditions, but he deeply knew and respected them. He rarely meditated, preferring sports and other active recreation. With all this, Tarok tried to follow logic both at a combat post in his youth and when commanding a starship. Because of his loose approach to Vulcan traditions, he was seen as a true renegade in Vulcan society.
Tarok had experienced arrogance from his fellow tribesmen on numerous occasions while serving aboard the USS T'Val and the USS Intrepid, and would rather prefer the company of humans than Vulcans.
