Station DSG1, headquarters of Task Force Perseverance | |
Task Force Perseverance was one of the special task forces of the Vanguard Fleet. It was commanded by Rear Admiral Adnan Kaplan. It had as its flagship the Vesta-class Command Cruiser USS Perseverance.
Task Force Perseverance was deployed to that part of unexplored space of the Gamma Quadrant beyond the collective borders of the Alliance of Gamma Quadrant Planets which led towards the Alpha Quadrant. It was the secondary mobile arm of Abraxis Command, which was the field division of Vanguard Command and had as its headquarters the Alexandria II-class Station Deep Space Gamma-01, or Station DSG1, located around the orbit of Abraxis IV.
Background[]
The idea to form Task Force Perseverance was made shortly after the launch of Abraxis Command and Task Force Dauntless. Vice Admiral Gibran was able to convince Starfleet Command that a special unit charged with exploring the far end of space between the Khronnian Suzerainty and the Alliance of Gamma Quadrant Planets and the boundary between the Gamma and Alpha Quadrants was important. Though the primary missions of the task force was science, exploration and diplomacy, it was also tasked to perform reconnaissance, intelligence and defense for Starfleet and the Federation in case there were potential threats in that region of space.
The idea drew inspiration and lessons from Project Full Circle, which was a similar endeavor done by Starfleet for the Delta Quadrant under the flagship of USS Voyager.
However, despite best efforts, Starfleet Command only allowed that the new task force was to be composed of 10 starships, with no two starships coming from the same class. Nevertheless, Admiral Gibran was able to negotiate that all 10 ships would be new constructions, outfitted with quantum slipstream drives, and modified in the same way as the ships of Task Force Dauntless, with enhanced science and tactical features.
Upon formation of the new task force, overall command was given to Rear Admiral Adnan Kaplan, a long-time colleague of Admiral Gibran, and was then attached to Abraxis Command as a special unit and secondary mobile arm of Abraxis Command. Task Force Perseverance was to fulfill its mission from out of Station Deep Space Gamma-01, which was to be its home base. It, however, utilizes Sub-station Abraxis Five as its frequent port of call for repairs, resupplies, and shore leave every two to three months.
The area of space between the farthest known parts of the Alpha Quadrant and the Alliance was vast. Several spacefaring races were reported to exist there.
Task force complement[]
Task Force Perseverance had a complement of ten (10) starships, composed of:

Task Force Perseverance.
It also had the Valiant-class Tactical Corvette USS Tomahawk as a companion ship to the USS Perseverance.
Task force auxiliary craft complement[]
Task Force Perseverance boasts of a diverse fleet of highly versatile auxiliary craft that allows the task force to conduct far wider mission profiles independently from their mother ships. The spaceframes of these small ships were compact and very sturdy, designed to endure a wide variety of harsh environments and astronomical hazards. The enhanced firepower and advanced propulsion systems installed in these auxiliary crafts also allow the task force to multiply its firepower many fold, or deploy personnel to far missions.
The following auxiliary craPs were assigned to the ships of Task Force Perseverance:
Class | Type | Number |
---|---|---|
Yellowstone-class | Runabouts | 6 |
Flyer-class | Heavy shuttlecrafts | 9 |
Type-11 | Medium shuttlecrafts | 24 |
Type-9 | Light shuttlecrafts | 26 |
Valkyrie-class | Advanced tactical flyers | 54 |

Deployment[]
Task Force Perseverance was expected to remain deployed for at least one year away from Station DSG1. It spent their first month traveling as one unit moving from one star system to another, to maximize safety. Later on, the ships split into two mission groups, with the USS Perseverance, the USS Tsurugi, the USS Lotharingia, the USS Moribus, and the USS Tori Tanto making up Mission Group Alpha, while the USS Kratos, the USS Hephaestus, the USS Kheshig, the USS Hatamoto and the USS Bohr making up Mission Group Bravo.

However, when the fleet operates were on high alert and there was a need to split into two groups, the USS Perseverance would take the USS Tsurugi, the USS Kheshig, the USS Kratos, and the USS Hatamoto along to form Strike Group One. These ships were the more tactically capable of the ten in the task force.
On the other hand, the USS Moribus would lead the USS Hephaestus, the USS Lotharingia, the USS Bohr and the USS Tori Tanto to a safe defensive location.

By practice, the USS Tomahawk was deployed during occasions when the USS Perseverance requires additional firepower in hostile situations, or requires a large enough ship for use by some of its senior crew to operate separately for an extended period of time.
The USS Tomahawk, though serving as the main auxiliary ship of the USS Perseverance, at times was deployed to provide extra protection to the Hephaestus when the latter’s usual sister ship, the Tori Tanto, was required to join the "battle group" of the flagship. In fact, dorsal external docking clamps were installed on the Hephaestus so that the USS Tomahawk and its crew could connect with the larger ship to conserve energy during extended periods of deployment.

Depending on the severity of the situation and the presence of the constant squadron companion of the USS Perseverance, the USS Hatamoto, the USS Tomahawk was supported by the two Yellowstone-class runabouts assigned to the USS Perseverance, the USS Kruger and the USS Katmai, usually forming up as a deadly squadron of gunships.
At certain times, the USS Tomahawk, alone or with the runabouts USS Kruger and USS Katmai, would be deployed to quickly provide defense to the USS Hephaestus or other ships of the task force.
The USS Tomahawk was commanded by one of the senior tactical officers of the USS Perseverance, Lieutenant Commander De-gral, a Takaran.
On the rare occasions when Admiral Kaplan was required to secretly report to DSG01, the Spirit-class scout USS Wyvern, the courier ship of flag officers of Abraxis Command, would ferry him from the location of the USS Perseverance straight to Abraxis Command headquarters.
