The USS Ballard (NCC-42823) was an Excelsior-class starship active during the 24th century. The Ballard was named after the 20th and 21st century oceanographer Robert Ballard. It was commanded by Captain Hanne Lindholm from its launch in 2348 until her promotion to Rear Admiral lower half in 2365. Command was then transferred to former first officer Carmen Falco, who had served in various positions aboard the Ballard since the beginning of her career.

Missions

The Ballard served under several different mission profiles from deep space exploration to ferrying VIPs. It, like many other ships of its class, also served on the front lines during the Dominion War.

In 2368, the Ballard was assigned to convey Admiral Laurence Whelan to the USS Pioneer, his next assignment.

Legacy

Carmen Falco first served aboard the Ballard as a commissioned cadet at Starfleet Academy completing field training. After the conclusion of her two year program, she left briefly for graduation ceremonies before returning to service. An exceptional officer deeply devoted to the Ballard and her crew, Falco quickly rose through the ranks. Ultimately, she became a protégée and close friend of Lindholm.

From 2349 to 2352, the Ballard was home to Lindholm's son Scott O'Reilly, the future commanding officer of the USS Pioneer. Though O'Reilly would initially begin his Starfleet career in the science track, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of this experience.
