The USS Defiant (NX-74205) is the prototype of the Defiant-class of starships in use by the Federation in the 24th century. The Defiant was launched in 2370 and shortly assigned to Station Deep Space 9. The Defiant saw action during the Dominion War and was destroyed by the Breen at the Second Battle of Chin'toka in 2375.
History[]
The Defiant was originally designed in 2366 as the first of a new line of combat-oriented starships. While being officially designated as an escort, the Defiant-class was designed specifically to fight and defeat the Borg, with Battle of Wolf 359 veteran Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko serving on the project as a high-level consultant. However, soon after the Defiant prototype was completed, the reduction of the Borg threat and several design flaws caused Starfleet Command to postpone the project. The shakedown crews noted that the Defiant’s propulsion systems were so overpowered relative to a ship its size that it nearly "tore itself apart".
Following the USS Odyssey's disastrous sortie against the Jem'Hadar in 2370, now-Commander Sisko requested the prototype NX-74205 be activated as an auxiliary craft for Deep Space 9. The Defiant would go on to serve for five years as Sisko's personal flagship through the Second Federation-Klingon War, the Dominion cold war, and in most of the major battles of the Dominion War.
During the Second Battle of Chin'toka the Defiant sortied from Deep Space 9 with Federation Alliance reinforcements. In the subsequent battle a Breen Chel Grett-class cruiser struck her with an energy dissipator, disabling the vessel's electrical systems and leaving her dead in space. Sisko was forced to order his crew to abandon ship, and as the escape pods cleared the stricken Defiant, several direct hits tore the vessel apart.
Successor[]
In 2375, the Defiant-class USS São Paulo was under the command of Vice Admiral William Ross for delivery to Station Deep Space 9 where she was placed under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko. Sisko received special dispensation from the Chief of Starfleet Operations to rename the ship to USS Defiant in honor of the fallen USS Defiant. The registry number NX-74205 was reused for the Battle of Cardassia as a memorial for the twenty-four crew members who died with the original vessel, but in early 2376 the vessel was redesignated NCC-74205-A.
