"The great majority of people are calm, resourceful, altruistic or even beyond altruistic, as they risk themselves for others. We improvise the conditions of survival beautifully."
— Rebecca Solnit

The USS Eclipse was a Nova-class Tactical Frigate in active service to Starfleet during the late 24th century.

Vanguard Command[]

The USS Eclipse was launched on 2380 from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards with extensive modifications to its onboard systems and a designation as Tactical Frigate.

Then newly promoted Commander Hakeem Majors was assigned to the USS Eclipse as First Officer at the start of 2383. Six months later, after the untimely death of the ship's commanding officer, Majors assumed command of the ship and was promoted to Captain. He and the crew served together until the end of 2384, and then were transferred together onboard the Wakizashi-class Destroyer USS Moro, except Major's first officer, Cornelia Junius who took over command of the USS Eclipse.

The ship underwent extensive refits and modifications for a second time in early 2385 at Starbase Sierra-Foxtrot 5 and was recommissioned as part of the Rapid Reaction Force of Vanguard Command.

The USS Eclipse did not have a captain's ready room, but had a briefing room one deck below the main bridge. It was much narrower and more confined than the similar space aboard a Luna-class Heavy Cruiser.

Ship features and capabilities[]

The USS Eclipse was intended as one of a few starships used as testbed for a combination of onboard technologies. It was also intended to follow on the heels of the legendary USS Defiant as a small ship that packs a lot of power, and the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) as a ship whose exceptional crew pushes its capabilities to the limit. As such, the ship was equipped with the following:

Offensive capabilities[]

Defensive capabilities[]

  • A transporter-welded tritanium-tetraburnium alloy space frame that can withstand extreme combat and propulsion stresses.
  • Enhanced and redundant structural integrity fields, which exponentially increased the ship's ability to maintain the integrity and shape of hulls and bulkheads against the extreme stresses caused by warp fields, weapons, and other motion.
  • Ablative hull armor, which rapidly dissipates the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire and makes the ship endure massive weapons fire even after its shield have been overpowered.
  • Ablative generators, which generated a nearly-impenetrable layer of armor around the hull of the ship.
  • Enhanced, regenerative, redundant, reinforced, multiphasic, multispectrum, unimatrix defensive shields, which protect the ship from energy weapons and torpedoes for an exponentially longer duration and make the ship's hull capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and pressure.
  • Microdiffracted carbon hull coating that absorbs all visible radiation that fell upon it, making it as black as the space it moved through.
  • A sensor stealth system, which mask the ship's warp signature and helped avoid detection during covert operations. Custom-designed warp coil insulators reduced its energy signature almost to nil. As long as radio silence was maintained, the ship could cruise unnoticed through interstellar space.
  • Advanced external holographic emitters, which give the ship the ability to alter its appearance by disguising itself as another object, such as an asteroid.

Propulsion capabilities[]

  • Enhanced impulse engines, which can attain sub-light velocities of 0.95c and faster-than-light velocities of Warp 1.2, allowing the ship to escape supernovas if the warp drive unexpectedly goes offline.
  • An enhanced maneuvering thruster array with retro-thrusters, which exponentially increased the ship's sub-light agility despite its size.
  • A Khronnian enhanced warp drive, which allows the ship to travel at a normal cruise speed of Warp 8.5 and a top sustained speed of Warp 9.5.
  • A quantum slipstream drive, which allows the ship to travel 300 light years in an hour.

Other onboard capabilities[]

Auxiliary crafts[]

The USS Eclipse has an auxiliary craft complement composed of:

Rapid Reaction Force[]

After its recommissioning, the USS Eclipse was assigned to the Rapid Reaction Force of Vanguard Command. It became one of the alternate mission specialists to Task Force Rogue and the USS Victor.

If the mission did not require a small battle group like Task Force Rogue, or an intimidating, heavy hitting starship like the USS Victor, but a starship that was less conspicuous and just as powerful - if not more powerful, the USS Eclipse was one of the alternative choices of Vanguard Command, after the USS Moro.

When necessary, the USS Eclipse is paired up with the Wakizashi-class Destroyer USS Moro, the new command of Captain Majors. Both ships have travelled to as far as the interstellar space around the territory of the Coalition of Delta Quadrant Races in the Delta Quadrant, launching from Station DSD1, to the star systems around the Alliance of Gamma Quadrant Planets in the Gamma Quadrant, facing off with numerically superior hostile Delta Quadrant and Gamma Quadrant forces, the Breen Confederacy, the Romulan Star Empire, the Tzenkethi, and others.

The USS Moro and the USS Eclipse

The USS Eclipse and her permanent lead ship, the USS Moro were the most frequent starships to deploy to the Gamma Quadrant on special missions in support of Task Force Perseverance, Task Force Dauntless, and Abraxis Command. On half of those occasions, they were joined by the refitted Korolev-class Heavy Cruiser USS Rob Roy, with Captain Majors in operational command over the special squadron.

On a few occasions, the USS Moro, the USS Eclipse, and the USS Rob Roy escorted the flagship of Task Force Perseverance, the Vesta-class Command Cruiser USS Perseverance on near-cowboy diplomacy missions to prevent hostile fleets from attacking non-aggresive worlds while the rest of the task force was split into two other groups conducting other missions.
