The USS Formidable was a Odyssey-class Command Battleship in active service to Starfleet during the late 24th century.

Vanguard Command

The USS Formidable was launched on 2384 from Antares Ship Yards and commissioned on 2385. It was one of eight Odyssey-class Command Battleships assigned to the Vanguard Fleet, the mobile arm of Vanguard Command. The other ships were the USS Illustrious, the USS Implacable, the USS Glorious, the USS Indefatigable, the USS Audacious, the USS Venerable, and the USS Repulse.

As part of Vanguard Command, the USS Formidable's capabilities included:

Offensive capabilities

• 20 collimated Type-XII phaser arrays.
• 10 Mark-XII pulse phaser cannons.
• A full payload of Khronnian enhanced high-yield photon torpedoes, which were almost powerful as standard quantum torpedoes.
• The capacity to launch quantum torpedoes and transphasic torpedoes, the latter only as a last resort.
• An Aquarius-class light escort as companion ship.
• A diverse and combat-modified complement of auxiliary crafts.
• A 40-man Starfleet Commando Force for special away team missions and even black ops mission.

Defensive capabilities

• Enhanced and redundant structural integrity fields, which exponentially increased the ship's ability to maintain the integrity and shape of hulls and bulkheads against the extreme stresses caused by warp fields, weapons, and other motion.
• Ablative hull armor and ablative armor plating, which rapidly dissipates the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire and makes the ship endure massive weapons fire even after its shield have been overpowered.
• Enhanced, regenerative, redundant, reinforced, multiphasic, multispectrum, unimatrix defensive shields, which protects the ship from energy weapons and torpedoes for an exponentially longer duration and makes the ship's hull capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and pressure.
• Microdiffracted carbon hull coating that absorbs all visible radiation that fell upon it, making it as black as the space it moved through.
• A sensor stealth system which masked the ship's warp signature and helped avoid detection during covert operations. Custom-designed warp coil insulators reduced its energy signature almost to nil. As long as radio silence was maintained, the ship could cruise unnoticed through interstellar space.

Propulsion capabilities

• Enhanced impulse engines that can attain sub-light velocities of 0.95c and faster-than-light velocities of Warp 1.2, allowing the ship to escape supernovas if the warp drive unexpectedly goes offline.
• An enhanced maneuvering thruster array with retro-thrusters, which exponentially increased the ship's sub-light agility despite its size.
• A Khronnian enhanced warp drive that allows it to travel at a normal cruise speed of Warp 8.5 and a top sustained speed of Warp 9.5.
• A quantum slipstream drive that allows the ship to travel 300 light years in an hour.

Other capabilities

• Bio-neural circuitry, which could process information more efficiently, and therefore speed up computer response time.
• Advanced holodecks for scientific and engineering research and for crew recreation.
• An Industrial replicator that could produce starship parts for repair and standard torpedo components for construction.

Task Force Belligerent

The USS Formidable was the Odyssey-class Command Battleship assigned to Task Force Belligerent, the mobile arm of Denorios Command. Task Force Belligerent operated from Deep Space 9 II, which was located near the Bajoran wormhole in the Bajoran System of the Alpha Quadrant. Task Force Belligerent was under the flag command of Rear Admiral Benjamin Sisko.

The specific assignment of the USS Formidable was as rapid response force, or mission specialist, of Task Force Belligerent. It also acted as the alternate flagship of the task force.

The USS Formidable's unique tasks included:

• Coming to the aid of the task force's smaller squadron formations
• Deploy to locations where there is a need to show the flag more strongly
• Intimidate hostile ships and discourage them from attacking the smaller squadrons
• Provide stronger defense to Station DS9 II, its home port.

In some occasions, it would team up with the Ambassador III-class Heavy Cruiser USS Zhukov and the Diligent-class Tactical Frigate USS Tughril, the two starships of the Rapid Reaction Force assigned to Station DS9 II, on high profile missions.
