The USS George Hammond (NCC-92963) was a Stargazer-class starship in service to Starfleet for nine months in the late 2400s.
History[]
The Hammond was named for Rear Admiral George Hammond, a Starfleet officer who was killed while commanding the Seventh Fleet six months into the Dominion War.
The ship was launched in October 2408 with Commander Kanril Eleya in command and posted to the Klingon front. Over the next few months the Third Federation-Klingon War reached its height, with Starfleet forces in the region making a series of raids on Klingon Defense Force positions. During a mission to rescue Federation diplomats in mid-February 2409 the Hammond skirmished inconclusively with the IKS mupwI'.
Decommissioning[]
In early June the Hammond responded to a call for reinforcements from a Starfleet task force which was engaged with True Way guerrillas and a KDF battle group in Eta Eridani sector block. The Starfleet ships destroyed or drove off most of the Klingon ships and disabled, boarded and captured the True Way flagship CDS Axon.
Kanril and crew beamed back aboard the Hammond and placed the Axon under tow, then came under attack by Klingon reinforcements consisting of ten Birds-of-Prey and a Negh'Var-class battle cruiser. The other Starfleet ships moved in to assist as the embattled Stargazer-class struggled to reach minimum safe distance from the planet, destroying four Birds blocking her path before the IKS QarchetvI' knocked out her warp drive and destroyed the upper port nacelle. The QarchetvI' then methodically targeted the Hammond's weapons arrays and blasted four large holes through the saucer, disabling the comm system and severely damaging the computer core. Kanril ordered the impulse drive manually shut down to signal surrender, but the Negh'Var-class continued firing and was only driven off when the USS Thy'lek Shran warped in with reinforcements and opened fire on the Klingons' flank.
The Hammond was towed back to Spacedock by the Shran, and the engineers judged the ship too badly damaged to be worth the expenditure of repair.
A routine board of inquiry was convened on the incident regarding possible negligence by Kanril in the loss of the ship, supported by reports from two members of her bridge crew. However, Starfleet Criminal Investigative Service investigators then recovered additional logs from the Hammond's damaged computer core that indicated Kanril had acted properly. All charges were dismissed, and Rear Admiral Thomas Rogers recommended her for the Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry.
Behind the scenes[]
The Hammond was named for Major General George Hammond of Stargate SG-1.
