The USS Hephaestus was a Hephaestus-class Support Carrier in active service to Starfleet during the late 24th century. It was was the prototype of its class.

Vanguard Command[]
The USS Hephaestus was the first starship launched from the Coronalis Frontier Fleet Yards on 2384 and was commissioned on 2385. The ship was among those constructed specifically for attachment to the Vanguard Fleet, the mobile arm of Vanguard Command.
As part of Vanguard Command, the USS Hephaestus's capabilities included:
Offensive capabilities[]
- Type-XII phaser arrays.
- Mark-XII pulse phaser cannons.
- A full payload of Khronnian enhanced high-yield photon torpedoes, which were almost powerful as quantum torpedoes.
- The capacity to launch quantum torpedoes and transphasic torpedoes, the latter only as a last resort.
- A diverse and combat-modified complement of auxiliary crafts.
- A 40-man Starfleet Commando Force for special away team missions and even black ops mission.
Defensive capabilities[]
- Enhanced and redundant structural integrity fields, which exponentially increased the ship's ability to maintain the integrity and shape of hulls and bulkheads against the extreme stresses caused by warp fields, weapons, and other motion.
- Ablative hull armor, which rapidly dissipates the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire and makes the ship endure massive weapons fire even after its shield have been overpowered.
- Ablative generators, which generated a nearly-impenetrable layer of armor around the hull of the ship.
- Enhanced, regenerative, redundant, reinforced, multiphasic, multispectrum, unimatrix defensive shields, which protects the ship from energy weapons and torpedoes for an exponentially longer duration and makes the ship's hull capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and pressure.
- Microdiffracted carbon hull coating that absorbs all visible radiation that fell upon it, making it as black as the space it moved through.
- A sensor stealth system, which masked the ship's warp signature and helped avoid detection during covert operations. Custom-designed warp coil insulators reduced its energy signature almost to nil. As long as radio silence was maintained, the ship could cruise unnoticed through interstellar space.
- Advanced external holographic emitters, which give the ship the ability to alter its appearance by disguising itself as another object, such as an asteroid.
Propulsion capabilities[]
- Enhanced impulse engines that can attain sub-light velocities of 0.95c and faster-than-light velocities of Warp 1.2.
- An enhanced maneuvering thruster array with retro-thrusters which exponentially increased the ship's agility despite its size.
- A Khronnian enhanced warp drive that allows it to travel at a normal cruise speed of Warp 8.5 and a top sustained speed of Warp 9.5.
- A quantum slipstream drive that allows the ship to travel 300 light years in an hour.
Computer capabilities[]
- Bio-neural circuitry, which could process information more efficiently, and therefore speed up computer response time.
- Advanced holodecks for scientific and engineeering research and for crew recreation.
- Industrial replicators that can produce starship parts for repair and construction and torpedo components for payload replenishment of the ships of the task force.
- Tractor rigs, which enhanced tractor beam strength by tethering the tractor beams to probes that could be attached to other objects, such as starships.
- A full Long-term Holographic Program Package for ship crew functions, composed of:
- Two Mark-III Long-term Command and Navigation Holograms (LCNHs)
- Two Mark-III |Long-term Security and Tactical Holograms (LSTHs), a Hirogen and a Gorn
- Two Mark-III Long-term Engineering Holograms (LEHs)
- An extensive Long-term Holographic Program Package for the ship's varied specialized functions, composed of:
- 20 Mark-IX Long-term Medical Holograms (LMHs) for the ship's medical facility bays.
- 30 Mark-III Long-term Engineering Holograms (LEHs) for the ship's engineering facility and flight deck bays.
- 20 Mark-III Long-term Science Holograms (LSHs) for the ship's science facility bays.
Ship layout[]
Along the longest axis of the ship's secondary hull, through the center and connected to the saucer section, was a single continuous corridor that almost ran the full length of the starship from bow to stern. Wider than normal, big enough that a ground rover could have traveled it with room to spare, it was lined with rooms of various functions, including the control centers and main offices of the large mission-specific bays and holds that these were adjacent to.
Bays One and Two[]
These were the ship's onboard medical facility, which can manage extensive and in-depth medical research on rare diseases to produce vaccines, or mass produce treatments for critical medical conditions, or implement emergency medical triage operations when required.

Bays Three to Six[]
These were filled with onboard industrial replicators and engineering facilities, which allows the ship to repair or replace any starship parts required by its sister ships, as well as make transphasic, quantum and photon torpedoes for itself and the ships of the task force. It can also produce construction materials and equipment to build planetary installations.

Bays Seven and Eight[]
These were the flight decks, auxiliary bays and repair bays for the ship's auxiliary craft complement and tactical flyer complement. The quarters of the flight crew and pilots were found on the main corridor that run along the spine of the ship's secondary hull, adjacent to these bays.

Bays Nine and Ten[]
These were filled with onboard science labs and facilities of the ship, which give the task force the capability of implementing extensive and in-depth scientific endeavors in the fields of astro-science, planetary science and xeno-science.

Bays Eleven and Twelve[]
These were the aerophonics and hydroponics bay and laboratories, which utilized suspended growing mediums to study and cultivate plants and fungi from different planets and the production of air-grown agricultural foodstuffs were done.

Bays Thirteen and Fourteen were the well-shielded cargo holds, which have the capacity to ferry non-replicatable materials such as benamite crystals for quantum slipstream drives and bio-neural circuitry.
Runabouts, scout ships and auxiliary crafts[]
The USS Hephaestus had four Yellowstone-class runabouts as part of its primary auxiliary craft complement, namely:
- The USS Mikumi
- The USS Seqouia
- The USS Vu Quang
- The USS Kinabalu
The USS Hephaestus also had the following auxiliary crafts:
- 4 Venture-class scout ships
- 4 Flyer-class heavy shuttlecrafts
- 4 Type-11 shuttlecrafts
- 4 Type-9 shuttlecrafts
- 10 Work bees
Task Force Perseverance[]
The USS Hephaestus was placed under the command of Captain Karesh-Jadom and assigned to Task Force Perseverance, under the flag command of Rear Admiral Adnan Kaplan.
The USS Hephaestus and the rest of the ships of Task Force Perseverance function as a special unit of Task Force Dauntless, which has as its home port Deep Space Gamma-01, the headquarters of Abraxis Command, located several light years "behind" the Gamma Quadrant terminus of the Bajoran wormhole. It was under and overall command of Vice Admiral Razal Gibran.
The mission of the ship and the task force was to explore that part of unknown space in the Gamma Quadrant going towards the boundaries of the Alpha Quadrant.
Condition Green[]
Under Condition Green, the USS Hephaestus would travel with the Saber-class Fast Frigate USS Tori Tanto.
