Vanguard Command[]

The USS Hephaestus was the first starship launched from the Coronalis Frontier Fleet Yards on 2384 and was commissioned on 2385. The ship was among those constructed specifically for attachment to the Vanguard Fleet, the mobile arm of Vanguard Command.

As part of Vanguard Command, the USS Hephaestus's capabilities included:

Offensive capabilities[]

Defensive capabilities[]

  • Enhanced and redundant structural integrity fields, which exponentially increased the ship's ability to maintain the integrity and shape of hulls and bulkheads against the extreme stresses caused by warp fields, weapons, and other motion.
  • Ablative hull armor, which rapidly dissipates the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire and makes the ship endure massive weapons fire even after its shield have been overpowered.
  • Ablative generators, which generated a nearly-impenetrable layer of armor around the hull of the ship.
  • Enhanced, regenerative, redundant, reinforced, multiphasic, multispectrum, unimatrix defensive shields, which protects the ship from energy weapons and torpedoes for an exponentially longer duration and makes the ship's hull capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and pressure.
  • Microdiffracted carbon hull coating that absorbs all visible radiation that fell upon it, making it as black as the space it moved through.
  • A sensor stealth system, which masked the ship's warp signature and helped avoid detection during covert operations. Custom-designed warp coil insulators reduced its energy signature almost to nil. As long as radio silence was maintained, the ship could cruise unnoticed through interstellar space.
  • Advanced external holographic emitters, which give the ship the ability to alter its appearance by disguising itself as another object, such as an asteroid.

Propulsion capabilities[]

  • Enhanced impulse engines that can attain sub-light velocities of 0.95c and faster-than-light velocities of Warp 1.2.
  • An enhanced maneuvering thruster array with retro-thrusters which exponentially increased the ship's agility despite its size.
  • A Khronnian enhanced warp drive that allows it to travel at a normal cruise speed of Warp 8.5 and a top sustained speed of Warp 9.5.
  • A quantum slipstream drive that allows the ship to travel 300 light years in an hour.

Computer capabilities[]

Ship layout[]

Along the longest axis of the ship's secondary hull, through the center and connected to the saucer section, was a single continuous corridor that almost ran the full length of the starship from bow to stern. Wider than normal, big enough that a ground rover could have traveled it with room to spare, it was lined with rooms of various functions, including the control centers and main offices of the large mission-specific bays and holds that these were adjacent to.

Bays One and Two[]

These were the ship's onboard medical facility, which can manage extensive and in-depth medical research on rare diseases to produce vaccines, or mass produce treatments for critical medical conditions, or implement emergency medical triage operations when required.

Sickbay Hephaestus

A section of the medical bay onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Sickbay2 Hephaestus

Another section of the medical bay onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Bays Three to Six[]

These were filled with onboard industrial replicators and engineering facilities, which allows the ship to repair or replace any starship parts required by its sister ships, as well as make transphasic, quantum and photon torpedoes for itself and the ships of the task force. It can also produce construction materials and equipment to build planetary installations.

Fabrication bay

A fabrication area of the engineering facilities onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Bays Seven and Eight[]

These were the flight decks, auxiliary bays and repair bays for the ship's auxiliary craft complement and tactical flyer complement. The quarters of the flight crew and pilots were found on the main corridor that run along the spine of the ship's secondary hull, adjacent to these bays.

Shuttlebay

The flight deck for auxiliary crafts onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Flight deck

The flight deck for the tactical flyers onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Bays Nine and Ten[]

These were filled with onboard science labs and facilities of the ship, which give the task force the capability of implementing extensive and in-depth scientific endeavors in the fields of astro-science, planetary science and xeno-science.

Science 1

A laboratory in the science bay onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Bays Eleven and Twelve[]

These were the aerophonics and hydroponics bay and laboratories, which utilized suspended growing mediums to study and cultivate plants and fungi from different planets and the production of air-grown agricultural foodstuffs were done.

Aeroponics

One of the aeroponics rooms onboard the USS Hephaestus.

Bays Thirteen and Fourteen were the well-shielded cargo holds, which have the capacity to ferry non-replicatable materials such as benamite crystals for quantum slipstream drives and bio-neural circuitry.

Runabouts, scout ships and auxiliary crafts[]

The USS Hephaestus had four Yellowstone-class runabouts as part of its primary auxiliary craft complement, namely:

The USS Hephaestus also had the following auxiliary crafts:

Task Force Perseverance[]

The USS Hephaestus was placed under the command of Captain Karesh-Jadom and assigned to Task Force Perseverance, under the flag command of Rear Admiral Adnan Kaplan.

The USS Hephaestus and the rest of the ships of Task Force Perseverance function as a special unit of Task Force Dauntless, which has as its home port Deep Space Gamma-01, the headquarters of Abraxis Command, located several light years "behind" the Gamma Quadrant terminus of the Bajoran wormhole. It was under and overall command of Vice Admiral Razal Gibran.

The mission of the ship and the task force was to explore that part of unknown space in the Gamma Quadrant going towards the boundaries of the Alpha Quadrant.

Condition Green[]

Under Condition Green, the USS Hephaestus would travel with the Saber-class Fast Frigate USS Tori Tanto.

Hephaestus & Saber

The USS Hephaestus and the USS Tori Tanto.

Condition Yellow[]

Under Condition Yellow, the USS Hephaestus was part of Mission Group Two led by the Luna-class Heavy Cruiser USS Kratos, together with the Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser USS Kheshig, the Steamrunner-class Heavy Frigate USS Hatamoto, and the Merian-class Fast Frigate USS Bohr.

Mission Group Two TFPerseverance

Mission Group Bravo, Task Force Perseverance.

Condition Red[]

Under Condition Red-1, the USS Hephaestus was part of Strike Group Two, led by the Intrepid-class Light Cruiser USS Moribus, together with the Norway-class Heavy Frigate USS Lotharingia, the Merian-class Fast Frigate USS Bohr and the Saber-class Fast Frigate USS Tori Tanto.

Strike Group Two TFPerseverance

Strike Group Two, Task Force Perseverance.

On occasions, when the USS Tori Tanto was required to accompany Strike Group One of the task force, the Yellowstone-class runabouts USS Kruger and the USS Katmai join the Valiant-class Tactical Corvette USS Tomahawk in replacing the former as protective escort to the USS Hephaestus in a rear position, far from the frontline.

Strike Group Two TFPerseverance2

The USS Hephaestus and Strike Group Two with the USS Tomahawk.
