The USS Paladin was a Katana-class Command Battleship classified as a "super capital starship" in active service to Starfleet during the late 24th century.

Vanguard Command[]

The USS Paladin was launched from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2384 and was commissioned in 2385. It was one of three of its class constructed by Starfleet Corps of Engineers to be attached to the Vanguard Fleet, the mobile arm of Vanguard Command.

Like the other flagships constructed for Vanguard Command, the USS Paladin's capabilities included:

Offensive capabilities[]

Defensive capabilities[]

  • Enhanced and redundant structural integrity fields, which exponentially increased the ship's ability to maintain the integrity and shape of hulls and bulkheads against the extreme stresses caused by warp fields, weapons, and other motion.
  • Ablative hull armor which rapidly dissipates the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire and makes the ship endure massive weapons fire even after its shield have been overpowered.
  • Enhanced, regenerative, redundant, reinforced, multiphasic, multispectrum, unimatrix defensive shields, which protects the ship from energy weapons and torpedoes for an exponentially longer duration and makes the ship's hull capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and pressure.
  • Microdiffracted carbon hull coating that absorbs all visible radiation that fell upon it, making it as black as the space it moved through.
  • A sensor stealth system which masked the ship's warp signature and helped avoid detection during covert operations. Custom-designed warp coil insulators reduced its energy signature almost to nil. As long as radio silence was maintained, the ship could cruise unnoticed through the void.
  • Advanced external holographic emitters, which give the ship the ability to alter its appearance by disguising itself as another object, such as an asteroid.

Propulsion capabilities[]

  • Enhanced impulse engines that can attain sub-light velocities of 0.95c and faster-than-light velocities of Warp 1.2.
  • An enhanced maneuvering thruster array with retro-thrusters which exponentially increased the ship's agility despite its size.
  • A Khronnian enhanced warp drive that allows it to travel at a normal cruise speed of Warp 8.5 and a top sustained speeds of Warp 9.5.
  • A quantum slipstream drive that allows the ship to travel 300 light years in an hour.

Other capabilities[]

Companion ship and auxiliary crafts[]

Docked underneath the dorsal superstructure of the ship was one Defiant-class Tactical Frigate, on external docking clamps, just underneath the ship’s sensor primary array. Sharing space with the third fighter wing and the auxiliary crafts on Flight Deck 2 were two Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes. These ships are the permanent companion ships of the USS Paladin.

The USS Paladin also had the following auxiliary crafts onboard:

Task Force Paladin[]

It was assigned to serve as the flagship of Task Force Paladin, which was the mobile arm of Iota Leonis Command, the field division of Vanguard Command located in the far end of the Beta Quadrant, and staging point to the Delta Quadrant. It was placed under the command of Rear Admiral William T. Riker, the concurrent Fleet Commander of Task Force Paladin and Sector Commander of Iota Leonis Command.

The USS Paladin and its task force patrol the area in the Beta Quadrant at the far end of Federation space that was closest to the meridian of the Delta Quadrant, as well as the dozens of star systems surrounding Starbase 185, the headquarters of Iota Leonis Command.

As flagship of Task Force Paladin, it leads 54 other combat-oriented starships during task force formations. As the flagship of Rear Admiral William Riker, its flag bridge also served as the mobile sector command hub of Iota Leonis Command whenever he was onboard. It was a combination of briefing room, operations center and workplace from which the flag officer could keep a weather eye on the ships of the task force and on the situation over dozens of star systems under Iota Leonis Command. It was dominated by a large, oval holotable, with virtual panes hanging suspended in the air above it and a gesture-sensitive interface. It also had an office area on one side of the room for the Sector Commander.

Condition Green[]

During Condition Green, the USS Paladin was always accompanied by a permanently attached escort complement. Three of which were its companion ships; one Defiant-class Tactical Frigate, was docked underneath the dorsal superstructure of the ship, on external docking clamps, when not deployed, while two Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes shared space with the Third Fighter Wing and the auxiliary crafts of the USS Paladin when not deployed. In addition to these ships, one Merian-class Fast Frigate and one Diligent-class Tactical Frigate were permanently attached to the Paladin as escort ships.

Condition Yellow[]

During Condition Yellow, the USS Paladin serves as flagship of Mission Group Alpha and was supported by the Akira-class Heavy Cruiser USS Jicarilla, two Saber-class Fast Frigates, two Merian-class Fast Frigates, two Diligent-class Tactical Frigates, two Defiant-class Tactical Frigates and two Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes.

Condition Red-1[]

During Condition Red-1 the USS Paladin' serves as flagship of Strike Group One and was supported by the Luna-class Heavy Cruiser USS Thalassa, the Akira-class Heavy Cruiser USS Jicarilla, the Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser USS Peleus, two Intrepid-class Light Cruisers, four Merian-class Fast Frigates, four Saber-class Fast Frigaates, four Diligent-class Tactical Frigates, four Defiant-class Tactical Frigates, and two Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes.

Special Missions[]

During very critical situations where the rest of the task force was preoccupied with their own missions, the USS Paladin and its companion ships form a temporary battle group with a combination of other ships. One combination was with the RRF starships assigned to Iota Leonis Command, the USS Wallace and the USS Chagatai.

On occasions when the USS Paladin is required to go on critical missions alone, it is temporarily replaced by the Odyssey-class Command Battleship USS Venerable, the alternate flagship of Task Force Paladin.
