The USS Voyager (NCC-74656) is a Federation starship in service to Starfleet in the late 24th century. The ship was launched from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and was placed under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway
Design and Capabilities[]
The Voyager had 15 decks and 257 rooms of different sizes and purposes, two holodecks, a mess hall for commissioned officers and a mess hall for enlisted personnel. It was the first ship to use bio-neural circuitry, as it was equipped with 47 bio-neural gel packs.
It was also the first ship with a class-9 warp drive, allowing for a maximum sustainable speed of Warp 9.975. Variable geometry pylons allowed Voyager and other Intrepid-class starships to exceed Warp 5 without damaging subspace. Like the Galaxy-class, the Voyager's warp nacelles were below the primary hull. The ship was also capable of planetary landings. Unlike the Galaxy-class, the ship could not perform saucer separation during an emergency.
Voyager was also the first ship with an Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) programmed with a library of more than five million medical treatments from 2,000 medical references and 47 physicians. Later referred to as "The Doctor", the EMH gained the capability to leave the sickbay during the mission's third year, thanks to a 29th century "mobile emitter".
The ship was initially equipped with 40 photon torpedoes with type VI warheads, two of which were equipped with tricobalt devices. Both tricobalt devices were used to destroy the Caretaker's array. Quantum torpedoes were also compatible with Voyager's launchers, with some modifications. Voyager housed five standard torpedo launchers (two fore, two aft, one ventral) and was able to fire up to four torpedoes per launcher at once.
During the years in the Delta Quadrant, the ship was augmented with custom, non-spec upgrades and modifications, some of which are modified from technology of other cultures, an example being Seven of Nine's alcoves and the Delta Flyer which both utilize modified Borg technology. Several pieces of technology from the future were also installed in the final episode, courtesy of Admiral Janeway who went back in time to bring Voyager home. Some of the adaptive solutions are to compensate for the disadvantages of being 70,000 light-years from port, such as the airponics bay and the transformation of the Captain's dining room to a galley, and the acquisition of enhancements from aliens in the Void that massively increased replicator efficiency.
Cargo bay 2 is equipped with several Borg alcoves when Captain Janeway forms an alliance with the Borg and several Borg are forced to work aboard Voyager during the alliance. Seven of Nine and Harry Kim build an astrometrics lab from scratch with Borg-enhanced sensors, knowledge of which Seven of Nine retained from the Borg. Additionally, the crew designed and built the Delta Flyer support craft at the behest of Tom Paris.
Delta Quadrant journey[]
On its first mission to retrieve Lieutenant Tuvok from his covert mission with the Maquis, Voyager and the Val Jean were flung 70,000 light years from the Badlands in the Alpha Quadrant to Kazon territory deep in the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, a member of the Nacene species. Several crew members of both ships were killed during the violent hurtle into the Delta Quadrant. Realizing the perilous state of their situation, Janeway and Chakotay, command of the Val Jean decided to put aside their differences in order to locate their missing crew and then find a way to return home. After the destruction of the Val Jean during a battle with the Kazon, the Starfleet and Maquis crew were forced to merge for their projected seventy-five-year journey home.
The year 2372 was marked by several devastating attacks by the Kazon. At one point Voyager was attacked four times in two weeks alone, losing three crewmembers and lowering morale. Commander Chakotay suggested forming an alliance with a few of the Kazon sects to ensure Voyager's safety through the region. A reluctant Captain Janeway eventually agreed to a meeting. The attempted collaboration, however, proved to be an almost futile mistake, making it impossible for Voyager to enter into any meaningful alliances with any of the Kazon sects. Hostilities between Voyager and the Kazon continued throughout the year.
In 2373, Voyager continues its voyage through the Nekrit Expanse, Neelix suggests that the crew have a talent night to keep everyone entertained and stave off boredom. Captain Janeway agrees and suggests that all senior staff play some part in the night to encourage all the crew to participate. Later that year, the crew of Voyager enter Borg space - and discover that the collective has lost the upper hand in a war against Species 8472, an immensely powerful race who hail from fluidic space.
In 2375 Seven of Nine detected a large communications network with a sensor range capable of reaching the outskirts of the Alpha Quadrant. A Federation vessel was detected in range of one of the farthest relay stations, and in lieu of failed attempts to contact the vessel via standard hails, The Doctor was transmitted to make contact, since his program would not degrade in transit.
Upon boarding the USS Prometheus, The Doctor found the crew dead and the ship in the hands of the Romulan military. With the help of the Prometheus' EMH, The Doctor was able to return the vessel to Starfleet custody and finally report on Voyager's situation.
Later in 2375, Voyager responded to a Federation distress call from the starship USS Equinox commanded by Captain Rudolph Ransom. The vessel had been stranded in the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker as well, and had been suffering attacks by unknown nucleogenic lifeforms. Unknown to the Voyager crew, the Equinox crew had been performing illegal experiments on the aliens in an effort to enhance their warp drive and return home sooner. Upon discovering this, Captain Janeway had the Equinox crew arrested, but they soon escaped. Janeway began a manhunt for Ransom, much to the dissatisfaction of Chakotay, who believed that Janeway was crossing the line. He convinced her to negotiate a cease fire with the aliens, but was relieved of duty for opposing her harsh attitude towards Ransom. Eventually Voyager caught up with the Equinox. Ransom, in a last minute change of heart, decided to surrender to Janeway. Unfortunately, his first officer, Lieutenant Maxwell Burke, had other ideas, and relieved his captain of duty. Ransom and chief engineer Ensign Marla Gilmore managed to beam the Equinox personnel to Voyager, but were unable to save Burke and the rest of the bridge crew. After dropping the shields around the warp core, the aliens caused a warp core breach, destroying the Equinox. The five surviving Equinox crew members were stripped of rank and ordered to serve as crewmen aboard Voyager, under close supervision with limited privileges.
Return[]
Voyager finally returned to the Alpha Quadrant and Earth in the end of 2377. In mid 2378, Voyager was officially re-launched and sent on its first mission under Captain Chakotay. Harry Kim became the Second Officer and took over security/tactical from Lieutenant Commander Tuvok, who had left Voyager to teach at Starfleet Academy. Lieutenant Lyssa Campbell, who had been with Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, inherited Kim's position at ops, while several Alpha Quadrant veterans joined the crew as well. Chakotay was pleased to have a Huanni counselor, Lieutenant Astall. Dr. Jarem Kaz succeeded the Doctor as chief medical officer, Akolo Tare was named senior flight controller while Devi Patel became Senior Science Officer.
During the Borg Invasion of 2381, Voyager was one of the vessels able to be reallocated to an allied fleet to reinforce the position of the USS Enterprise-E and the USS Aventine at the Azure Nebula. While the Enterprise and Aventine traversed subspace tunnels, hoping to find the Borg launching area, Captain Chakotay and Voyager remained in command of the fleet, overseeing efforts to open other tunnels. However, from an allied fleet of over 300, Voyager was the only ship to survive the Borg invasion force of over 7000 Borg cubes from the subspace tunnel within the nebula, and was able to emit a distress call to Starfleet Command.
While the ship was intact, it had its port warp nacelle sheared from its pylon by a grazing collision with a Borg cube and was drifting in space. The Voyager crew were attempting to salvage material from the battle site to rebuild the nacelle before joining the USS Enterprise-E and the USS Aventine on their search for the source of the Borg invasion.
After the Borg Invasion of 2381, Voyager was refitted with a quantum slipstream drive and made the flagship of Project Full Circle. Chakotay resigned after the Borg invasion and the ship was placed under the command of Captain Afsarah Eden. One of the first missions after getting into the Delta Quadrant would be to meet up with B'Elanna and Miral Paris, who had faked their own deaths to escape Klingon cultists.
In September 2382, as Voyager prepared for a new expedition outside the Milky Way Galaxy, Janeway and Chakotay decided to get married. The wedding was held on board Voyager, officiated by Captain Regina Farkas, of the USS Vesta. Seven and B'Elanna served as bridesmaids, Tom Paris and Harry served as groomsmen.
In 2384, Voyager and the Project Full Circle fleet returned to the Alpha Quadrant, concluding Janeway's flag command with this unit.
