The Undine are a non-humanoid species which was born on in Fluidic space. They are most commonly known by Delta Quadrant races as Species 8472 which was taken from their Borg designation. The Undine are tripedal, or three-legged, beings, capable of shapeshifting and telepathy.
They naturally developed a hyper-active immune system capable enough to be used as a form of physical attack.
During an incident with the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, Ensign Harry Kim was affected by enough of this immune system to be partially "infected" by it, resulting in his body being consumed from the inside out by the Undine cells that infiltrated his systems.
Origins[]
It was initially believed that Species 8472 were the same race as the Ultari since they both had the ability to shapeshift. But this theory was proven false when it was revealed that the Ultari can be assimilated by the Borg. Kyara revealed that the two species had once lived on the same planet. The Ultari had used them similar to the way the Romulans used the Remans; as slaves and cannon fodder. The Undine revolted and escaped to the Delta Quadrant where they made first contact with Voyager in the year 2373.

- It is a common misconception that the Undine have five genders, but instead have major racial differences.
- The Undine possess the technology to develop "Bioships" which they used to great effect during a war with the Borg; in fact the Borg were in danger of losing, which prompted an alliance with Captain Kathryn Janeway.
