The Federation scout ship, classified as the Venture-class scout ship, was a 24th century vessel in the service of Starfleet that was primarily used in research missions to gather scientific data and aid in planetary and cultural surveys. These vessels were ideal in scenarios where a larger, full-fledged starship would have been a excessive use of resources.
Overview[]
At slightly over 24 meters in length, the scout ship was roughly eight meters longer than a Type-11 medium shuttlecraft, but still small enough to be carried aboard a standard Starfleet starship’s shuttlebay. The scout ship had a tough, robust look to it, not unlike the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates.
In many ways the scout ship was like a runabout, but it was more agile and robust. The design of the scout ship was also sleeker and more streamlined than a runabout or a shuttlecraft, and its aerodynamic properties really paid off when it was flying within a planetary atmosphere.
The Venture-class was designed to be a small, swift, and highly maneuverable sensor platform. It was a support vessel capable of independent operation. The scout ship had a sophisticated array of sensor equipment, making it ideally suited for research duties and was primarily used as a support vessel in collecting sensor readings for planetside research stations. These properties made it useful for a range of scientific missions, including planetary surveys, cultural surveys, first contact programs, and other scientific research.
Vanguard Command[]
Venture-class scout ships assigned to the Vanguard Command also assume the additional roles of a drop ship for Starfleet Commando Force personnel and combat support vessel. They are also utilized for the pickup and transportation of personnel and equipment. They are also used as transport vehicles for civilians during quick evacuations.
Venture-class scout ships assigned to Vanguard Command underwent extensive modifications and refits to possess the following capabilities:
- An enhanced warp drive that allows the ship to travel at a normal cruising speed of Warp 7, a top sustained speed of Warp 8.5, and a maximum attainable speed of Warp 9 for 12 hours.
- Upgraded weapons systems: 4 Type-X phaser arrays, 4 Type-X pulse phaser, 3 mini-torpedo launchers and a payload of 40 quantum mini-torpedoes.
- Upgraded defense systems: Enhanced Deflector shields, unimatrix shielding, ablative hull armor, ablative armor plating, microdiffracted carbon hull coating, a sensor stealth system
Venture-class scout ships were included in the standard auxiliary craft complement of starships attached to the Rapid Reaction Force of Vanguard Command and were utilized as the primary drop ships of the embarked Starfleet Commando Force crew of these vessels.

Onboard tactical systems[]
The class could be used for military reconnaissance, providing aerial intelligence on enemy troop movements. It could also perform reconnaissance of entire star systems, collating information on the attack capabilities of an enemy force. This could obviously be a dangerous undertaking, and the scout ship was well armed with dual-mounted phaser banks and torpedo launchers to defend itself.
Propulsion[]
Its warp nacelles were encased within the ‘wings’ for better protection, and it was capable of reaching a top speed of warp 5 for limited periods. Impulse engines were located within two spurs that projected from the back of the main body. Thanks to its reaction control system (RCS) thrusters, it was capable of performing high-speed intricate maneuvers and extreme swoops and spins, much like an old-style jet fighter.
Accommodation[]
The scout ship only required one pilot, who sat in a cockpit that was similar to the one found aboard a Type-9 shuttlecraft. The only major difference was a set of panoramic windows at the front that allowed the pilot an excellent view ahead, to the sides and above. The rear interior of the craft included a number of science stations and room for five to ten passengers.
